Obama won't be pouring ice water on his head

Washington (CNN) - President Obama is opting to stay dry.

Ethel Kennedy, the matriarch of the Kennedy family, challenged the President to dump a bucket of ice water on his head as part of the increasingly popular Ice Bucket Challenge campaign to raise money for research into Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) – or Lou Gehrig's disease.

"The President appreciates Mrs. Kennedy thinking of him for the challenge – though his contribution to this effort will be monetary," Principal Deputy White House Press Secretary Eric Schultz said Tuesday.

He added that Obama will make a donation to an ALS charity this week.

In a Facebook video posted by Max Kennedy, the political family got together at their compound in Hyannis Port this weekend to participate in the challenge.

After over 20 members of the Kennedy family dumped ice water on their heads, the group screamed, "We nominated Grandma Ethel."

Ethel Kennedy, the widow of Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, said, "Welcome to Cape Cod, Mr. President. I nominate you," before dumping a bucket of ice water on her head.

Obama is in Martha's Vineyard for a two-week summer vacation with his family.

The Ice Bucket Challenge is a social media campaign that aims to raise awareness and money to combat ALS. Started by Pete Frates, who has lived with ALS since 2012, and his family, the campaign asks participants to dump a bucket of ice water on their head and then nominate their friends to do the same.

Those friends have the opportunity to follow their friend or donate $100 to ALS awareness.

Using the #IceBucketChallenge, the campaign has garnered national attention, with celebrities and athletes starting to participate.

One other noteworthy Kennedy – Rep. Joe Kennedy of Massachusetts – took the ice bucket challenge last week.

CNN's Kevin Liptak contributed to this report.

And 3 weeks from now, GOPers/Teatrolls will still be reacting to this whole thing as though Obama dressed up as Lou Gherig and went out to the Rose Garden to pour a bucket of ice water on his head in the middle of a press conference.

Of course, not. The way I understand this "challenge" is that you either donate $100, or you dunk yourself with ice water. So, why are all of these people so proudly dumping ice water over their heads? Are they not donating?

On a more serious note, Robin Williams. I think some of his best acting was done in "Bicentennial Man". Over the course of the movie, Williams' character's personality constantly changes and evolves from a robot to a human being. It's as if he played well over a dozen separate characters in a single film.

what a nice description of the next POTUS Hillary Clinton!! If you think any of the GOP anointed mouthpieces of the Koch brothers and the Christian right is gonna win, I suggest you go to counseling because a severe case of depression is looming. I am sure the tightie righties will scream bloody murder about how "Obama hates ALS patients" "Obama only cares about himself" etc etc etc because he won't do this stunt. A monetary gift (and no matter what it is the haters will complain) is much better

At least the challenge is not compared with the whipping test for manhood performed by the Nigerian Fulanis in their marriage ceremony....here failing the challenge means no marriage.

The only person worse than Obama is Hillary. And Obama is a pitiful example of a US President! Many today hate Congress and rightly so. When the Demos enacted the "nuclear option," Congress came to a standstill, which makes sense. Harry Reid, in his dementia, set that in motion. The American People have had enough of this Clown and his party. You've had your fun. Now, We, the People, will take our country back!

LoL. The purpose of the movement is gather donations for a charity but the ice bucket over the POTUS would have been funny and would have been good to bring more awareness to the charity.

He will be sorely missed. I thought critics were to quick to dismiss his ever changing performance in "Bicentennial Man". I've heard lot's of talk all day about how he adlibbed as scene in Aladdin where goes through a couple of dozen different voice personalities in half a minute or so. I guess he does it more gradually in "Bicentennial Man", taking time to explore the differences in the robot's ever evolving brain and appearance. Maybe not his most memorable work, but I think it was one of his best performances.
