Rick Perry: It’s possible ISIS has crossed southern border

Washington (CNN) – It’s a “very real possibility” that individuals with the extremist group ISIS may have crossed into the United States at the southern border, Texas Gov. Rick Perry said Thursday, though he added he doesn’t have any evidence.

Because the border is insecure, Perry said that “individuals from ISIS or other terrorist states could be” taking advantage of the situation. “I think it's a very real possibility that they may have already used that,” he told an audience at the Heritage Foundation in Washington.

“We have no clear evidence of that,” he continued.

Perry said Texas has seen historic levels of individuals from countries with terrorist ties recently, including three Ukrainians arrested on a ranch in West Texas in the past two months, he said.

Perry used the argument to frame the broken border situation as a matter of national security.

“We need to have clear and compelling forces, both law and enforcement and otherwise, to send the message that the border is secure,” the potential 2016 Republican presidential candidate said.

Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby told CNN on Friday that there was no evidence that the terrorist group is sending operatives across the southern border.

"I’ve seen no indication that they are coming across the border with Mexico," Kirby said on "New Day." "We have no information that leads us to believe that. That said, we do know they have aspirations to hit western targets, and it's something...we've got to take seriously and we have to try and be ready for it."

Officials have expressed concern about American citizens and westerners who have joined ISIS. Those individuals are holding passports that allow them to enter the U.S. legally.

ISIS, a Sunni Muslim extremist group that refers to itself as the Islamic State, has waged a rapid campaign across Iraq this summer seizing towns and villages and targeting Christians, minority sects, and Shia Muslims.

In his remarks, Perry called for a more robust response to ISIS in Iraq, saying the Obama administration’s recent actions have been inadequate.

“When they talk about limited airstrikes, they place a great emphasis on the word 'limited,’ yet clearly more airstrikes are necessary,” he said. “Nothing less than a sustained air campaign to degrade and destroy ISIS forces is required.”

Asked by a reporter in the audience if he would support combat troops on the ground, Perry said, “all your options have to be open.”

This is a very dangerous and irresponsible statement for a Governor to make.
Especially the Governor of a state that is currently seized by paranoia, xenophobia, and distrust of anything that does not resemble the Wonder Bread world of the 1940's and '50s that this Governor and some of his citizens aspire to.
A state whose people are seeing "the country that they want back" slipping from their hands, compounded by a recuperating but by no means completely healed economy.
These types of statements by someone who is supposed to lead can do nothing but stir up violence against innocent people.
The atrocities of Nazi Germany started amongst other things with the perfect alignment of an ailing economy, a people who desperately wanted to feel superior to others, and the continuous infusion of xenophobia and blame placed on individuals that looked different.
Stupid Ricky needs to stfu before he needs to call in the feds to stop something that he won't be able to handle.

""What a load of bull. He lies yet again to American's faces as usual. He just released a bunch of Al-Qaeda terrorist leaders in exchange for a awol soldier so this is more propaganda as usual."

    Oh FFS.

Obama brings one of our soldiers home: GOPers/Teatrolls run around screaming that he is a deserter and should have been left with Al Qaeda....even though the Joint Chiefs of the military repeated over and over that he was innocent until proven guilty and we leave nobody behind.

White cop shoots unarmed black teen: GOPers/Teatrolls can't stop screaming "innocent until proven guilty" over and over and over and over again and Faux's Hannity even spends an entire interview this morning yelling at a Ferguson town official and talking over her to mansplain "innocent until proven guilty" to her....Bill-O even cut his vacation short so he can come back and get on the air to yell and scream about "race hustlers."

    Teatrolls = racist pigs.

Why worry about ISIS? Obama says they are the JV team of terrorists. Obama's current CIA director said the whole idea of an Islamic caliphate was ludicrous and would never happen. Clearly we are in good hands.

huh? What was that? ISIS has taken over large parts of Syria and Iraq and declared the creation of a new Islamic caliphate? Did you also say they are beheading Americans captured and threatening to fly their flag over the White House?

I'd like to revise my original statement. Obama and his clueless ban of idiots are living in a fantasy world and we are screwed.

"He's not even asserting that it has occurred; just that the possibility exists?!

    really?

    right through his state?!"

If you need some perspective about just how concerned the GOP/Teatrolls are about the browning of America turning red states purple, just look up how many electoral votes TX has.

Treating pure fantasy as "judgement" is exactly how these Tea Party conspiracy theories get started.

rick perry speculates on some ignorant theory of what may be happening (we arrested us some Ukrainians the other day, so Martians must be invading) so therefore, "Dems are just daring the deranged to strike the USa..." really? How does your thought processes work? Do you just mix some xanax with some lye soap, add it to your kool aud and prescription medication and start posting?

And your second sentence would get you thrown out of most 5th grade Comp classes.

Dude – you know this is a total fantasy in Perry's head right. It didn't really happen.
With such a tenuous grasp on reality, no wonder the Tea Party is going down in primaries.

This has always been the concern for conservatives. Opening our borders will let the next generation of terrorist into the country. How many 9-11's does it take before we protect our borders?

Hey Perry, don't you have the national guard on the border? @ 12 million a month? Are you that inept that you can't control your borders?

    "Why worry about ISIS?"

Are we not bombing them? Is there something else Obama needs to do? I mean, obviously you right wing kool aid drinkers have sooo much more information about our Nation's security than the Commander in Chief and his staff, please enlighten us on what further steps we need to take... troops on the ground, perhaps 100,000 or so. Perhaps you'd like to go the bush route and invade a country that had nothing to do with this? Maybe Holland?

It doesn't matter what Obama does... you are going to ctriticize and hate on him and tell us all how stoopid and screwed we are.

If Obama lost Texas to ISIS tomorrow, he'd still be a better president than bush (if he refused to negotiate for perry's release, then I guess I might finally agree with you on something... No negotiating with terrorists)

    Hey, conservatives. Remember this?
"If you're not with us [the White House], then you're with the terrorists." George W. Bush.

Us referred to the USA moron. Bush wasn't the narcisist that Obama is. He actually realized he lead the USA and not some political hack operation.

So where's the outrage from the RWNJ Usual Suspects about this Texas doofus, sporting Clark Kent glasses in an attempt to at least outwardly appear intelligent, using the BEHEADING of an American journalist to make faux-political points.
Shameful behavior beneath even this felonious jerk.
