The Bush dog joke you never heard

(CNN) - In a draft speech prepared for President Bill Clinton’s appearance at the 1997 Alfalfa Club dinner, a speechwriter’s joke went too far for someone in the White House.

“Socks has been a [sic] exemplary first pet; I don’t want to disparage Millie but some have described her as – well it starts with ‘B’ and rhymes with ‘witch’,” read the joke.

Clinton weighs in on American political dynasties

(CNN) - The Clintons and the Bushes aren't the only families with an extended presence in American presidential politics.

That's a piece of history Hillary Clinton was sure to note in an interview published Tuesday in Germany's Der Spiegel when asked if America will turn into a monarchy if she or Jeb Bush were to win the presidency in 2016 (should either decide to run).

Americans agree with Barbara Bush

(CNN) - Barbara Bush made national headlines last year when she said on NBC that her son Jeb shouldn't run for president in 2016 because "there are a lot of great families. It's not just four families, or whatever. There are other people out there that are very qualified. We've had enough Bushes."

And in an interview earlier this year on C-SPAN, the former first lady added that "I think this is a great American country, and if we can't find more than two or three families to run for high office, that's silly."

Bush family spokesman: Barbara wasn't telling Jeb not to run

Washington (CNN) - Former first lady Barbara Bush is not trying to pull the rug out from under a possible presidential bid by her son, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, a Bush family spokesman tells CNN.

The spokesman tells CNN’s “State of the Union” that Barbara Bush feels misinterpreted by the media coverage of her most recent comments.

Barbara Bush hopes Jeb won't run for president

(CNN) - If former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush makes a bid for the White House, he may not have his mother's blessing.

Former First Lady Barbara Bush said in an interview with C-SPAN on Thursday that the United States needs to expand the number of families holding the nation's highest political office beyond her own, as well as the Clintons and Kennedys.

That's how former President George H.W. Bush and former First Lady Barbara Bush are marking their 69th wedding anniversary, according to a spokesman.

Jim McGrath tells CNN that with Barbara Bush recovering from pneumonia, the two are celebrating their anniversary at home.

Bushes thank Obama, Clinton for well wishes

Washington (CNN) – Former President George H.W. Bush tweeted a thank you on Thursday to Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton for extending well wishes to his hospitalized wife, Barbara Bush.

The former first lady was admitted to Methodist Hospital for “respiratory-related issues” on Monday, according to family spokesman Jim McGrath. As of Wednesday, Barbara Bush was still hospitalized and McGrath said there had been no change in her condition since she was admitted.

Bill Clinton wishes full recovery to his other 'mother,' Barbara Bush

(CNN) – Former President Bill Clinton sent good wishes Wednesday to his adoptive Republican mother and former first lady Barbara Bush, who's been hospitalized in Houston since Monday.

"I'll be rooting for Barbara Bush's full recovery while she's rooting for Baylor today. All my best to her and @GeorgeHWBush," he tweeted.

Former first lady Barbara Bush hospitalized

(CNN) – Former first lady Barbara Bush has been hospitalized in Houston, Texas, for treatment of a "respiratory-related issue," a family spokesman said Tuesday.

Bush, 88, was admitted Monday at Methodist Hospital, spokesman Jim McGrath said in a written statement.
