Governors, peering over 'fiscal cliff,' place blame differently

(CNN) – Two high-profile governors had vastly different assessments Sunday of who was to blame for the massive cuts to defense spending that are slated to go into effect at the beginning of next year.

The so-called "fiscal cliff," which would force the Pentagon to cut $500 billion from its budgets over the next decade, came about after congressional negotiators failed to agree on a deficit-reduction plan last fall. Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, a Republican, blamed the potential cuts on the White House, while Gov. Deval Patrick, Democrat of Massachusetts, said Republicans in Congress were to blame.

McDonnell furiously defends Romney from Obama salvo

Williamsburg, Virginia (CNN) – The war of words over Mitt Romney's tenure at Bain Capital flared Friday morning inside a Virginia trucking company, as the state's normally mild-mannered Gov. Bob McDonnell harshly rebuked the Obama campaign for demanding that the presumptive Republican presidential nominee release more of his tax returns.

At a press conference inside a Williamsburg trucking company organized by the Republican Governors Association to coincide with President Obama's campaign swing through the commonwealth, McDonnell and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker derided the president for using Bain to distract from his "horrible" record in the White House.

Poll: Does McDonnell on ticket change race in Virginia?

Washington (CNN) - A second straight survey indicates a pretty close race right now between President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney for Virginia's 13 electoral votes.

According to a Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday morning, the president holds a 47%-42% margin over Romney in the battleground state, with 6% unsure. Obama's five point margin is down from an eight point 50%-42% lead over Romney in Virginia in Quinnipiac's previous poll in the state, which was conducted in March before the former Massachusetts governor became the presumptive GOP presidential nominee.

Romney backer offers soft Obama praise

Washington (CNN) – Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell of Virginia on Sunday partially credited President Barack Obama’s policies with his state's relatively low unemployment rate, but also said the figure would be better with a President Mitt Romney.

The Romney backer said stimulus programs supported by the president helped his state in the short-term with health care, education and balancing the budget but would not help cut the unemployment rate long-term.

Democratic group makes $100k Wisconsin push in final days

(CNN) - The Progressive Change Campaign Committee announced on Saturday it is spending $100,000 in the last five days before the Wisconsin gubernatorial recall vote.

This latest spend brings the PCCC's investment supporting the recall of Republican Gov. Scott Walker, plus his lieutenant and several state legislators, to $300,000, the group said, with two thirds of that coming in the last two weeks.

Romney: Virginia could decide the election

(CNN) – The importance of the presidential vote in Virginia was not lost on Mitt Romney when he appeared in the state on Thursday beside popular Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell, ahead of President Barack Obama's official re-election launch in the state on Saturday.

"Now politics is underway, it's underway again. You're going to hear it all right here in Virginia," Romney said at an event in Portsmouth, Virginia. "This may well be the state who decides who the next president is."

McDonnell: Obama's pursuit of bin Laden was 'gutsy'

Washington (CNN) - Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, a Republican and potential running mate for presidential candidate Mitt Romney, said Tuesday that President Barack Obama's decision to pursue and kill Osama bin Laden in Pakistan was "gutsy."

"It was a good moment for America," McDonnell said in a phone interview with CNN. "It was a good moment for President Obama, mainly because of the incredible bravery of the men and women in uniform. And that's been one of the areas that this president has done okay. Those were some gutsy decisions that he made to take out bin Laden and some other terrorists."

McDonnell's Va. ads are about his state, not himself, spokesman says

(CNN) – Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell is not running for re-election next year. He can't by law. Yet a glowing ad buy from his political action committee has hit the airwaves and sparked questions as to why he needs the publicity.

The ad, released last week, features a stream of Virginians pointing to the state's job growth and budget surplus. "Jobs and opportunity are thriving again," McDonnell said at the end of the spot. "Virginia is growing strong, and so is our future."
