Dems pick up House seat in California, expand net gain to five

(CNN) - Republican Rep. Brian Bilbray conceded Friday to Democrat Scott Peters in California's 52nd congressional district, giving Democrats a net gain of five seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.

In a statement conceding the race, Bilbray congratulated his opponent and thanked his supporters.

Dems pick up another seat in House

(CNN) – Republican U.S. Rep. Dan Lungren of California will lose his battle for re-election against Ami Bera, CNN projected Thursday, meaning Democrats will pick up another seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Vote tallies from the Sacramento County elections office show Bera leads Lungren 51.1% to 48.9%, with a raw vote margin of 5,696.

California governor sees tax referendum as sign of changing tide

(CNN) -– Gov. Jerry Brown sees California voters’ openness to temporarily increasing taxes on wealthy individuals’ income as a sign voters nationwide may be open to the idea.

“The cutting and the deficits are out of control,” the California Democrat said Sunday on CNNs “State of the Union.”

Obama to visit Leno's 'Tonight Show'

(CNN) - President Barack Obama takes a seat on Jay Leno's couch Wednesday, but hardly to relax - his appearance will come with just under two weeks left until Election Day.

The interview, which the White House announced Monday, on NBC's "Tonight Show" will also be approximately a week after he sat in the hot seat on Comedy Central's "The Daily Show."

A fracas? Congressional debate gets ugly

(CNN) - Though it didn't come to fisticuffs, so heated was the exchange between the two debating candidates for a San Fernando, California congressional seat Thursday night that a police officer got up on stage to separate the two.

During the debate Thursday at Pierce College in Woodland Hills, two incumbent Democratic congressmen -Rep. Brad Sherman and Rep. Howard Berman- got into a verbal disagreement over the correct author of the immigration legislation known as the DREAM Act.

Obama to announce Cesar Chavez monument, send message to Latinos

(CNN) - President Obama will make modern history Monday when he announces the creation of a monument to honor Cesar Chavez, as he works to energize Latino voters less than a month before the presidential election.

The Cesar E. Chavez National Monument will become the 398th park in the National Park Service system, and the first since the 1700s to honor a Latino, the park service told CNN.

Columbus Day is early voting day in three states

(CNN) – Voters in California, Indiana and Oregon can take advantage of the Columbus Day holiday to cast their ballots Monday when the three states join ten other states that already have started early voting.

That's less than a week after the first presidential debate and 29 days ahead of Election Day.
