Republicans defend bundled debt-ceiling package in weekly address

Washington (CNN) – The Republicans' latest weekly address makes no mention of the government funding bill whose passage they spent recent weeks tying to an effort to defund Obamacare. Instead, the focus is now on the debt limit.

In Saturday's address, Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, the GOP conference chairwoman, calls the debt limit debate “a golden opportunity to fix the problems coming out of Washington."

Debate ensues on day one of forced spending cuts

Washington (CNN) – They argued over the forced spending cuts known as sequestration before those cuts took effect, and on the first full day of the cuts being official, Congress and the White House are still bickering over who is to blame.

“It’s happening because Republicans in Congress chose this outcome over closing a single wasteful tax loophole that helps reduce the deficit,” President Barack Obama said in his weekly address on Saturday.

Lawmakers offer helping of holiday thanks with side dish of debt worries

(CNN) – After a heated campaign season, lawmakers expressed gratitude in their Thanksgiving remarks but not without the political undertones of an economy limping back to life and impending fiscal crisis.

In their weekly addresses, both sides first thanked members of the military serving abroad and those on the East Coast still suffering in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy.

CNN panel reflects divide in GOP on party's future

(CNN) - Mitt Romney's loss in Tuesday's election has prompted a flood of opinions on the future of the Republican Party, many of which were on display Sunday during a panel moderated by CNN chief political correspondent Candy Crowley and senior congressional correspondent Dana Bash.

On one side was former Romney campaign adviser Carlos Gutierrez, who pushed for a move to the center by saying the election results were the consequence of the "far-right wing of the Republican Party."

For GOP star, mom, challenges go beyond Congress

Both sides call for cooperation in debt reduction talks

(CNN) - With the deadline for the debt ceiling negotiations rapidly approaching, President Barack Obama called on Democrats and Republicans to work together to find “a balanced approach” to solving the nation’s debt crisis.

“Right now, we have an extraordinary – and extraordinarily rare – opportunity to move forward in a way that makes sure our government lives within its means,” Obama said in his weekly address. “And I’m hopeful that we will rise to the moment, and seize this opportunity, on behalf of all Americans, and the future we hold in common.”

'Pledge to America' is first step, says Republican lawmaker

Washington (CNN) - Republicans' "Pledge to America" plan released last week is the first step in starting a national dialogue, a Republican congresswoman told CNN Chief Political Correspondent Candy Crowley on Sunday, when asked why the 21-page manifesto lacked specifics.

"This isn't the Republican platform," Washington Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers said on CNN's State of the Union. "This isn't everything the Republicans want to accomplish. These are the first steps, these are priority issues that we believe need to be addressed today."

Republicans have learned from their losses in recent years and have redoubled efforts to listen to voters, Rodgers said, adding that the GOP's new proposals reflect a change in the party.
