(CNN) - Former President Bill Clinton last week tried to persuade Florida Democratic Senate candidate Kendrick Meek to drop out of the three-way contest, according to a report by Politico that was confirmed by CNN.
A senior Democratic official told CNN that the White House was aware of Clinton’s negotiations, and that Democrats believed the move would prevent Republican candidate Marco Rubio from winning the Florida Senate seat.
As part of the deal, Republican-turned-independent Gov. Charlie Crist would then caucus with Democrats in the Senate. Meek was considering the option until two days ago, but the deal eventually fell apart, according to the source.
(CNN) – It was 'Three's Company' in the final Florida Senate debate as Republican candidate Marco Rubio, Democratic candidate Rep. Kendrick Meek and independent candidate, Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, met in Orlando one week before the election.
The dominant issues in the debate, which was moderated by NBC Meet the Press anchor David Gregory, were the housing crisis and a rousing conversation about the future of Social Security.

(CNN) - The three-way Florida Senate race seemed more of a two-sided contest Sunday as Republican front-runner Marco Rubio's opponents both targeted him in a debate on CNN's "State of the Union."
Democratic Rep. Kendrick Meek and Republican-turned-independent Gov. Charlie Crist both tried to portray Rubio as too rigidly conservative for Florida in the spirited hour-long debate.
Crist, who launched an independent campaign after losing the Republican primary to Rubio, said he would have left the Republican party even if he had won the primary.

(CNN) - Marco Rubio is widening his lead in the battle for an open Senate seat in Florida, according to a new poll.
A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Wednesday also indicates that the state's gubernatorial battle is deadlocked.
(CNN) – When independent Senate candidate Charlie Crist railed on health care reform legislation in a debate held Tuesday night, he didn't call it health care reform, he called it "Obamacare."
"I think that Obamacare was off the charts, was wrong," Crist said in a debate between the Sunshine State's three Senate candidates held at Nova Southeast University in Fort Lauderdale. "It taxed too much, has mandates that are probably unconstitutional and it's not the way to go."
"And it was rammed through," Crist added for good measure.
Moments later, the Democratic candidate, Rep. Kendrick Meek, saw an opening.
(CNN) - Independent Florida Senate candidate Charlie Crist scored an endorsement from a big Democratic name on Wednesday, as a new poll shows he needs all the help he can get.
Environmental activist Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., the nephew of former President John F. Kennedy and the late Sen. Ted Kennedy, has thrown his family name behind Crist, who until earlier this year held elected office as a Republican.
(CNN) - Florida's independent Gov. Charlie Crist has received another endorsement in his bid for the state's open Senate seat. This one came from California's Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Schwarzenegger endorsed Crist via Twitter, writing "Our country needs someone like him in DC right now."
Washington (CNN) - Independent Senate candidate and Florida Governor Charlie Crist is speaking out about his position on women's issues, his opponents' policies and what exactly happened during that botched opening pitch at the Texas Rangers/Tampa Bay Rays baseball game on Thursday.
In an interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer, Crist said "I never did play baseball but I sort of felt like that movie, what's that movie? Major League with Bob Uecker and Charlie Sheen?"
