(CNN) – Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill's campaign has released a new ad hitting Republican opponent Todd Akin for his conservative stance on contraception as a part of a statewide buy in Missouri.

The 30-second television spot, which began airing Saturday, depicts the six-term congressman as holding "extreme beliefs" and being out of touch with voters.

McCaskill: Akin so extreme, other conservative looks like a 'hippie'

(CNN) – Sen. Claire McCaskill fired back Friday at Rep. Todd Akin over his recent characterization of her as less "ladylike" in the pair’s current senatorial election than she was in her last, dismissing her Republican foe as an outlier even in right-wing circles.

"I was speechless," the senator said in an interview with MSNBC, referring to Akin’s latest comments. "I mean, this is somebody who does make Michele Bachmann look like a hippie. He is that far on the fringe."

Akin consultant compares him to cult leader

(CNN) - A consultant for Rep. Todd Akin likened the Senate candidate to David Koresh on Friday, saying Akin's ability to withstand GOP pressure to withdraw from the Missouri race was like the cult leader's resistance during the deadly 1993 standoff with federal authorities.

Consultant Kellyanne Conway said she has expressed her opinion to Akin "for a while now," adding Akin was successfully able to sustain the aftermath of his controversial rape comments last month.

Akin: McCaskill more 'ladylike' in last election

(CNN) – Embattled Rep. Todd Akin, who on Tuesday repeated his decision to remain in Missouri's battle for U.S. Senate, said in an interview published Thursday his opponent, Democratic incumbent Sen. Claire McCaskill, was more "ladylike" in her 2006 election than she is this time around.

According to the Kansas City Star, Akin claimed McCaskill's demeanor at last week's debate indicated she was nervous about remaining in office.

Santorum, DeMint endorse Akin

(CNN) – Sen. Jim DeMint and former GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum on Wednesday morning endorsed Missouri Rep. Todd Akin, who is seeking to unseat Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill and made headlines for his controversial comments on rape earlier this fall.

On Tuesday – the last day Akin could legally request his name be removed from the November ballot – the congressman set out on a bus tour of the state. His move defied calls from a number of Republicans and GOP groups - including his state's Republican party - to quit the race, concerned his continued candidacy would challenge their chances of winning control of the Senate.

Akin passes on last chance to drop out, Republicans write off Senate seat

Washington (CNN) - Instead giving in to fellow Republicans desperate for him to drop out of the Missouri Senate race, a defiant Todd Akin gathered conservative supporters and launched a campaign bus tour.

"I have one purpose going into November and that's replacing [Democratic Senator] Claire McCaskill," the congressman said to an applauding crowd in St. Louis on Tuesday, the last day state law permitted him to remove his name from the ballot.

Akin deflects question on 'rape' comment in debate

(CNN) – Rep. Todd Akin couldn't escape questions about his now-infamous comments on "legitimate rape" from August during a U.S. Senate debate Friday, deflecting the inquiry as tangential to the real issues his race against incumbent Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill should be about.

"I've answered this question repeatedly," Akin said. "I don't believe this election overall is about talk."

Akin assessing candidacy with conservatives in Florida

Tampa, Florida (CNN) - Facing pressure from Republican heavyweights in Washington to abandon his Missouri Senate bid, Rep. Todd Akin is huddling with top conservative activists in Tampa to assess whether to move forward with his embattled candidacy.

Akin spent Wednesday night and Thursday in a series of private meetings at the two-day summit of the Council For National Policy (CNP), a secretive group of conservative leaders who are meeting in Florida before next week’s Republican National Convention.
