Akin hits fund-raising goal, spotted in Tampa

(CNN) – Rep. Todd Akin, embroiled in scandal after a controversial remark he made about rape, announced Thursday he hit a fund-raising goal of $100,000 in the last two days.

"Over the past 48 hours, I have apologized, been attacked by the party bosses, yet through it all, voters have rallied behind me," Akin said in a statement released by his campaign.

McCaskill the comedian: Missouri race 'boring'

St. Charles, Missouri (CNN) – While Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri has largely stayed on message regarding her opponent Republican Rep. Todd Akin and his status in their upcoming Senate race, she used the whole controversy to lighten the mood a bit before a stump speech.

Responding to a man who asked how her day was going as she waited for a microphone to be set up, McCaskill said, "You know, everything's pretty boring these days."

Senate battles head on to the general in Missouri and Michigan

(CNN) - Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri now has the Republican challenger she'd hoped for, but the first term senator still faces a serious fight to keep her seat in November.

It appears to be a different story in Michigan, where Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow's re-election prospects after Tuesday's primary continue to look strong against GOP attempts to defeat her in the general election.

Akin declares victory in three-way Missouri GOP primary race

(CNN) - Rep. Todd Akin declared victory Tuesday evening in a hotly contested Missouri GOP Senate primary that featured a crowded field of candidates battling for a spot to face off against Democratic incumbent Sen. Claire McCaskill in November.

Akin faced businessman John Brunner and former state treasurer Sarah Steelman in the primary.

Bridges unburned: Biden praises McCaskill

(CNN) – Vice President Joe Biden closely aligned himself Monday with Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri, saying he's a "strong, strong ally" of the first-term senator.

"She knows who she is and what she believes in, and she's willing to take risks to fight for what she believes in," Biden said at a private fund-raising event in Kansas City, according to a pool reporter in the room.

McCaskill to skip Democratic convention

(CNN) - One of President Barack Obama's biggest supporters will not be attending this summer's Democratic National Convention.

Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri told reporters Tuesday that she has never gone to conventions when she's had contested elections, and that the Washington press reaction to the news is "silly." Earlier Tuesday an aide to McCaskill confirmed to CNN that the senator will not go to the convention, which will be held in Charlotte, North Carolina during the first week of September.

(CNN) - A leading national tea party group is jumping into the Republican Senate nomination battle in Missouri.

The Tea Party Express, in an email release Thursday morning, announced they will endorse former Missouri State Treasurer Sarah Steelman, kicking off a two-day roll out in St. Louis, Springfield and Kansas City.

Fearing earmark creep, senators propose new ban

Washington (CNN) – A year after Congress voluntarily agreed to give up earmarks - pork barrel spending projects critics say cost too much and may have an outsized influence on some lawmakers - the special-interest provisions have crept slowly back into legislation, two senators warned on Wednesday.

"There is an effort under way to go back to earmarking as usual, as it used to be," said Sen. Patrick Toomey, R-Pennsylvania. "I think that would be a disaster for our country and our congress and we intend to do our very best to prevent that."
