CONFIRMED: BAGHDAD REQUESTS U.S. AIR SUPPORT ... Gen. Martin Dempsey, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told members of the Senate Appropriations Committee Wednesday that the United States has received a request from the Iraqi government to use air power to help roll back gains won by Sunni militants fighting for the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). UNLIKLEY ALLY: COULD THE U.S. WORK WITH IRAN IN IRAQ? The United States could end up cooperating with Iran to stop militant gains in Iraq, Secretary of State John Kerry suggested Monday in an interview with Yahoo!News. But Kerry didn't indicate that cooperation with Iran is under active discussion inside the administration.

King: Obama wrong to hold news conference on Iraq

(CNN) – Rep. Peter King, a member of the House Homeland Security Committee, says the President shouldn’t have announced that the United States will not be sending troops to Iraq.

“I don’t think you should ever tell the enemy what you are going to do and what you’re not going to do,” King, R-New York, told CNN on Saturday, a day after the President Barack Obama made remarks at the White House. “I would have thought that with a crisis like this, he should not have called the (news) conference to announce he will look at it.”

OBAMA MULLS IRAQ AIRSTRIKES BUT SAYS NO BOOTS ON THE GROUND ...  No troops to Iraq, but other options are being considered. That was President Barack Obama's message Friday in response to the lightning advance by Sunni militant fighters in Iraq that could threaten the government of Shiite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki. In a statement delivered from the White House South Lawn, Obama said the United States "will not be sending U.S. troops back into combat in Iraq," but that he would be reviewing a range of other options in coming days. – Barbara Starr and Tom Cohen

CANTOR: THE DAY AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE: The day after his stunning primary loss to political novice Dave Brat, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor told reporters on Capitol Hill that he will not try for another term in the House, and that he will resign his leadership post on July 31. “While I may have suffered a personal setback last night, I couldn't be more optimistic about the future of this country," Cantor insisted.

VA AUDIT: OVER 63,000 VETERANS WAITING FOR CARE ... An audit of hundreds of Veterans Affairs facilities released Monday found that more than 63,000 veterans were waiting to be scheduled for care nationwide, and the Department of Veterans Affairs announced it was scrapping performance bonuses for all senior management in 2014 as part of its response to the review. According to the audit findings released Monday, a 14-day deadline for providing care to newly enrolled veterans such as those coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan proved "simply not attainable" due to growing demand and a lack of capacity. – Tom Cohen
