FreedomWorks backs incumbent members of Congress

(CNN) - The political action committee for FreedomWorks, a grassroots conservative group known for backing tea party challengers, released a list Monday of incumbent lawmakers it's endorsing in this year's midterm elections.

In the Senate, the group backs third-term Sen. Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma, who doesn't have a Republican challenger.

Ukraine financial aid package stalled in Congress

(CNN) - A Ukraine financial aid package stalled in Congress on Thursday, caught up in a fight over IMF funding and an unrelated dispute over rules aimed at curbing political activities by nonprofit groups.

Senate Democrats rejected a proposal floated by Republicans to add language to the Ukraine measure that would delay new IRS regulations for how the agency oversees some tax-exempt organizations.

Senate deal would extend long-term jobless benefits

(CNN) – A group of 10 U.S. senators has reached a deal to extend federal benefits to the chronically unemployed for five months, a development one negotiator called a "bipartisan breakthrough."

Five Republicans have signed on to the $10 billion measure, effectively meaning it should clear the Democratic-led chamber. A vote is not expected until after next week's recess and prospects for passage in the House are uncertain.

Pelosi: Alleged CIA spying on Senate committee ‘appalling’

Washington (CNN) - House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi on Thursday called recent allegations of CIA spying on the Senate Intelligence Committee "pretty appalling" and said the agency’s response to the controversy has been "befuddling" so far.

"I have very serious concerns about transparency and oversight and the intelligence community honoring its responsibility to Congress in that regard," Pelosi told reporters.

Boehner invites Pope to address Congress

(CNN) – House Speaker John Boehner marked Pope Francis’ first anniversary Thursday by extending an open invitation to him to address a joint meeting of Congress.

Boehner, who is Catholic, noted in a statement that the Argentinian was the first Pope "to hail from the Americas."

Democrats try to increase pressure on unemployment benefits

Washington (CNN) – Nearly three months after extended unemployment benefits expired, Democrats tried to ratchet up pressure on the issue with dozens of lawmaker signatures and a line of Congressmen marching together into the House Chamber.

“Do the right thing, Mr. Speaker: give us a vote,” Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi of California told reporters Wednesday, as she and dozens of her party members prepared to file a discharge petition in the House, aimed at forcing a House vote on an unemployment insurance extension.

Bipartisan senators block civil rights nominee after charged debate

(CNN) – In a surprisingly strong vote, the Senate on Wednesday blocked President Barack Obama’s controversial choice to head the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice.

The bipartisan rejection came after the widow of a slain Philadelphia officer pleaded with senators to vote “no.”

House committee resolution urges sanctions against Russia

(CNN) - The House Foreign Affairs Committee proposed a bipartisan resolution on Wednesday condemning Russia over its military intervention in Ukraine and urging economic and other sanctions in response.

The non-binding proposal said Russia's action poses a threat to international peace and security.

Poll: Anti-incumbent feelings at all time high

Washington (CNN) - Eight months to the day before Election Day 2014, anti-incumbent sentiments are at a record high, according to a new national poll.

And an ABC News/Washington Post survey also indicates that with control of the U.S. Senate up for grabs this November, Republicans have a slight advantage over Democrats in the states holding Senate elections.
