Poll: Democrats slightly ahead in 2014

(CNN) - The 2014 midterm elections may be 18 months away, but congressional campaigns are already gearing up for the fight.

And Republicans hoping to take back the Senate or maintain control of the House may struggle to get their wish, according to a new national poll released Wednesday by Quinnipiac University.

House approves measure to end air traffic control furloughs

(CNN) - The U.S. House of Representatives on Friday passed a measure aimed at ending budget-related air traffic controller furloughs that were blamed for widespread flight delays this week.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said earlier Friday that President Barack Obama would sign the bill, which the Senate passed Thursday night.

Ricin suspect freed, marshals say

(CNN) - The Mississippi man accused of sending ricin-tainted letters to President Barack Obama and other officials has been released from federal custody, a spokesman for the U.S. Marshal's Service said Tuesday.

Paul Kevin Curtis, an Elvis impersonator from Corinth, Mississippi, was charged with sending a threat to the president last week after letters containing the poison triggered security scares around Washington. But a preliminary hearing that had been scheduled to continue on Tuesday was canceled and Curtis was released.

(CNN) - While the eyes of the nation were trained on Boston and West, Texas, this week, lawmakers in Washington turned their eyes to two major issues.

At the same time, they contended with a poisonous threat in the form of letters the FBI said tested positive for ricin sent to President Barack Obama, a U.S. senator, and a Mississippi judge, as well as suspicious packages that turned up in the hallways of two Senate office buildings.

Test results due in ricin scare; Mississippi man arrested

(CNN) - Test results were expected Thursday on letters possibly contaminated with the deadly poison ricin that were sent to President Barack Obama and Sen. Roger Wicker this week.

The FBI arrested Paul Kevin Curtis in connection with the case at his home on Corinth, Mississippi, on Wednesday, the department said in a statement.

Official addresses Senate community in time of 'heightened alert'

(CNN) - While an arrest has been made in connection with possibly contaminated letters sent to President Obama and Sen. Roger Wicker, a string of other incidents took place in Washington this week, causing confusion and anxiety on Capitol Hill.

Senate Sergeant-at-Arms Terrance Gainer addressed those concerns in a memo to the Senate community Wednesday night.

Breaking: Arrest made in ricin letter case

(CNN) – An arrest has been made in connection with letters sent to President Barack Obama and Sen. Roger Wicker that authorities are testing to determine if they contain ricin, two federal law enforcement officials said Wednesday.

The person was arrested in the Tupelo, Mississippi, area, one of the officials said.

Man arrested with loaded gun on Capitol grounds

Washington (CNN) – A man protesting new gun control measures being considered by the Senate was arrested Tuesday on the Capitol grounds when police discovered he was carrying a loaded handgun, CNN has learned.

The arrest happened at 2 p.m. on the Senate side of the plaza in front of the Capitol, according to U.S Capitol Police spokesman Officer Shennell Antrobus.

Breaking: Envelope tests positive for ricin at Washington mail facility

Washington (CNN) - An envelope that tested positive for the deadly poison ricin was intercepted Tuesday afternoon at the U.S. Capitol's off-site mail facility in Washington, congressional and law enforcement sources tell CNN.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said he was told the letter was addressed to the office of Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Mississippi. After the envelope tested positive in a first routine test, it was retested two more times, each time coming up positive, the law enforcement source said. The package was then sent to a Maryland lab for further testing.

On Capitol Hill, Giffords, Kelly express optimism over gun bill

Washington (CNN) - As proponents of gun control legislation in the Senate struggle to get enough votes for their bill, former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and her husband, Mark Kelly, say they feel "optimistic" that the bipartisan compromise will get enough approval.

And Sen. Joe Manchin, D-West Virginia indicated the bill could potentially be tweaked to convince opponents to join their side, while Vice President Joe Biden said advocates are "working" to get the 60 votes needed to pass.
