Connie Mack won't run for Senate

(CNN) -Rep. Connie Mack has decided not to run for Senate, the Florida Republican announced Friday, a surprise to some political watchers who had considered him the likely frontrunner in what is expected to be a crowded field vying to take on incumbent Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson.

In an interview with the St. Petersburg Times Friday, the three-term congressman cited personal reasons for his decision not to enter the race.

Rep. Connie Mack blasts Venezuela's 'thugocrat'

Washington (CNN) - Republican Florida Rep. Connie Mack called Venezuela President Hugo Chavez a "thugocrat" during a speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) Saturday where the three-term congressman also called for a "full-scale economic embargo" on the country.

CPAC is the largest annual gathering of conservative-minded activists, which this year is extra-important because it's the first cattle-call of potential 2012 Republican presidential candidates.
