
(CNN) - Former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates on Thursday cautioned against some of the foreign policy rhetoric on the campaign trail, particularly words used by the top two Republican presidential frontrunners.
Asked about Newt Gingrich, who calls for a regime change in Iran to prevent the development of a nuclear weapons program, Gates stressed the complexity of the situation in an interview with CNN's "John King, USA."

(CNN) – Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell of Virginia, who recently threw his support behind Mitt Romney, said Thursday he would consider a vice presidential run should he be offered the spot.
"I'm chairman of the Republican Governors Association so I want to win lots of Republican governors races this year, but if somebody called me, I'd sure think about it," McDonnell said.
(CNN) - President Barck Obama's senior campaign strategist David Axelrod downplayed Mitt Romney's Florida primary win on Wednesday, repeatedly calling the former Massachusetts governor a "weak frontrunner."
"It was a tactical victory, I’m not sure it added to his luster as a potential leader of the country," Axelrod said on CNN's "John King, USA."
(CNN) - Rick Santorum said Monday he plans to release four years of tax returns that he found while digging through paperwork at his Pennsylvania home this weekend.
"But I want to make sure that I get someone to take a look at them to make sure that we – that I have everything that I'm supposed to have," Santorum said on CNN's "John King, USA."

(CNN) - Texas Rep. Ron Paul said his former secretary was wrong when she said in the Washington Post Friday he had personally approved racist newsletters in the 1990s.
"She's made that story up," Paul said on CNN's "John King USA."
"She also said that I was in and out of the office every single day. The office wasn't even in the town that I live so that's completely false reporting. And they should have verified that. Because I think somebody from my staff answered it but that's completely false."
(CNN) - Newt Gingrich's campaign admitted Wednesday night the former House speaker was inaccurate when he claimed his team offered several witnesses to ABC News to refute statements made by Gingrich's second wife in a controversial interview aired last week.
CNN Chief National Correspondent John King reported the campaign said it only recommended Gingrich's two daughters from his first marriage, who wrote a letter discouraging ABC to release the interview.

(CNN) – Newt Gingrich fended off criticism of his work with Freddie Mac Tuesday, the day after the firm he founded released a contract representing one year of work for the mortgage giant.
Gingrich specifically sought to clarify a remark he made at Monday's NBC News debate, when he said his firm hired a lobbying expert to guide them on lobbying rules.

(CNN) - Ron Paul said Friday he thought it sounded "fun" to use his fiercely-committed backers to influence the Republican Party's platform at this summer's GOP national convention in Tampa.
Paul, speaking with CNN Chief National Correspondent John King, was speculating about his path forward should he not win the 2012 GOP nomination. Interviewed for "John King USA" in Nashua, New Hampshire, Paul said it would be "difficult, but not impossible" to beat a path to victory should former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney win the New Hampshire and South Carolina primaries.
