Christie gets first official opponent in '13 re-election

(CNN) – New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie now has a Democratic challenger as he runs for re-election next year, but it's probably not the candidate you may have had in mind.

New Jersey state Sen. Barbara Buono Tuesday officially announced her bid for governor in an email to supporters and on her campaign website. In a video, the Democratic state lawmaker criticized the tough-talking Republican governor.

Booker says Christie 'vulnerable' in re-election bid

(CNN) – He hasn't yet announced whether he'll make his own bid for New Jersey governor, but Newark Mayor Cory Booker claimed Monday his potential rival, Republican incumbent Chris Christie, is politically out of alignment with voters in the Garden State.

"Christie is vulnerable, as it should be, because there's a lot of issues in the state he's not falling in line with," Booker, a Democrat, said on CNN's "Starting Point with Soledad O'Brien." "From women's issues, environmental issues, from really going in a balanced way."

Booker: Presidential run 'not even in the realm of consideration'

(CNN) - Newark, New Jersey, Mayor Cory Booker did not deny his interest in seeking higher political office in an interview on CNN's "Piers Morgan Tonight" Friday, when he also spoke about living for a week on food stamps.

"It's a little more difficult than I imagined," said Booker, a Democrat. "I thought it would be good on eating on a tight budget, so I started out not really marshalling my food well, so I'm really cutting back now."

Cory Booker spending week on food stamps

(CNN) – Hoping to break any stigmas of government assistance, Newark Mayor Cory Booker of New Jersey will live on food stamps this week–a challenge that first began as a Twitter conversation.

The Democratic mayor will operate on a food stamp budget of about $30 a week ($4.32 per day), roughly the same amount provided to people in New Jersey who take part in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

Second straight poll indicates big lead for Christie

(CNN) - A new poll is the second this week to indicate most New Jersey voters think Chris Christie deserves re-election next year, and is the second straight to give the Republican governor large leads over his possible Democratic challengers.

According to a Quinnipiac University survey released Wednesday morning, two-thirds of registered voters in New Jersey say Christie deserves to be re-elected in November 2013, with only one in four saying he doesn't deserve a second term in Trenton.

Newark Mayor Cory Booker to live on food stamp budget

New York (CNNMoney) – Newark Mayor Cory Booker rescued a neighbor from a burning building, invited Hurricane Sandy victims to his home, and rushed to the aid of a pedestrian hit by a car. Now he's going to live on a food stamp budget for a week in solidarity with Americans who feed their families on the government assistance program.

The mayor's office has yet to announce the full details of his plan, but the budget should amount to about $4.44 a day for food, based on data from the United States Department of Agriculture.

Booker says Sandy delaying his decision on gubernatorial bid

(CNN) – Cory Booker says he'll decide quickly on whether to make a bid next year for New Jersey governor.

But Newark’s Democratic mayor says his decision has been pushed back because of Hurricane Sandy, which slammed into the Northeast late last month, leaving many parts of the Garden State severely damaged.

Two high-profile governors races ensure 2013 won't be quiet year

(CNN) – Take a larger than life governor who may have designs on the White House and a battleground state crucial in presidential politics, and guess what: 2013 might not be as quiet a political year as you thought.

New Jersey and Virginia are the only two states to hold gubernatorial contests in the year after a presidential election, and in both states, the campaign clocks are already ticking.

Booker: Sununu's comment was 'unfortunate'

(CNN) – Newark Mayor Cory Booker, a top surrogate for President Barack Obama's campaign, said Friday that a surrogate for Mitt Romney made the wrong call when he argued Colin Powell endorsed Obama because they shared the same race.

"Whatever he meant or not, it was a statement that is unfortunate and just reflects a lack of understanding and sensitivity," Booker said on CNN's "Starting Point with Soledad O'Brien."

Tired of 2012? Only 384 days 'til 2013 NJ

(CNN) - All eyes are fixed on New Jersey in November... of 2013.

While it's a fairly safe bet the Garden State will go to President Barack Obama this year, what could happen at the polls on November 5, 2013 in the gubernatorial race is far from certain.
