Shutdown an instant factor in 2013 elections

(CNN) - The federal government shutdown is playing out immediately on the campaign trail.

In Virginia, which holds a gubernatorial election in five weeks, the campaigns of Republican Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli and businessman and former Democratic National Committee Chairman Terry McAuliffe are both trying to use the shutdown, which began at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, to their advantage.

Booker shrugs off Twitter exchange with exotic dancer

Newark Mayor Cory Booker is known for engaging in casual banter on Twitter with people from all walks of life, and one of those private exchanges with an exotic dancer was made public Wednesday.

And a Booker spokesman said the mayor doesn't regret it.

"It is obviously pretty innocuous and quite frankly there is nothing there," Booker spokesman Kevin Griffis said about the mayor's interaction with the stripper, Lynsie Lee.

Polls: Booker leads in New Jersey race

Washington (CNN) - The special Senate race in New Jersey is getting tighter, but Democratic nominee Cory Booker still leads his GOP opponent, according to a new poll released Tuesday.

And a separate poll indicates Booker has an even wider lead over former Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan, with less than a month to go before the October 16 special election.

(CNN) – Cory Booker’s political fundraiser Monday night might as well include a red carpet with an all-star lineup that includes Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner.

The celebrity heavyweights are lending their names and support to New Jersey’s Democratic Senate hopeful, CNN confirmed.

N.J. Poll: Commanding lead for Cory Booker

(CNN) - With just over a month to go until the special U.S. Senate election in New Jersey, a new poll indicates Democratic candidate Cory Booker holds a more than two to one advantage over Republican Steve Lonegan.

According to a Rutgers-Eagleton survey released Wednesday, 64% of likely voters in the Senate special election support Booker, the two-term major of Newark, New Jersey, who's considered a rising star in the Democratic party, with 29% backing Lonegan, the former mayor of the northern New Jersey town of Bogota.

Booker says rival's remarks 'callous' and 'bigoted'

(CNN) – Cory Booker hitting back at his GOP rival for U.S. Senate, calling Steve Lonegan's remarks about his sexuality "sad" and "bigoted."

The dust-up began when Booker told the Washington Post he isn't bothered about speculation he's gay. That assertion, Lonegan declared in an interview with a conservative online publication, was "weird."

Booker's opponent says sexuality speculation 'weird'

(CNN) – Steve Lonegan, the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in New Jersey, said in an interview Tuesday that ongoing chatter about rival Cory Booker's sexuality was "weird," and that he personally likes "being a guy."

The response was prompted by an interview that Booker, the mayor of Newark, gave to The Washington Post this week in which he said he wasn't bothered when people speculate whether he's straight or gay.

Obama backs Booker

(CNN) – In an announcement with little surprise, President Barack Obama officially endorsed Newark Mayor Cory Booker in the U.S. Senate special election in New Jersey.

The president praised the Democratic mayor for his work in public office in a statement released Wednesday by Booker's campaign.

Christie to stand with former rival in NJ Senate battle

(CNN) - As New Jersey's Republican Senate nominee stands shoulder to shoulder with Garden State Gov. Chris Christie, a new poll indicates he trails Newark Mayor Cory Booker by double digits in October's special election.

According to a Monmouth University/Asbury Park Press Poll released Tuesday, Booker leads Steve Lonegan 54%-38% among those likely to vote in New Jersey's Oct. 16 special election. The survey was conducted Thursday through Sunday, following landslide primary victories last week by both Booker and Lonegan, the former mayor of the northern New Jersey town of Bogota, in the Democratic and Republican Senate primary contests.
