Kerry's Senate replacement a 'no' vote on existing Syria resolution

Washington (CNN) – The man who replaced John Kerry, who left the Senate to become secretary of state, will not support the military strike against Syria that his predecessor has been advocating.

Massachusetts Democrat Edward Markey voted "present" last week when the Senate Foreign Relations committee passed a resolution authorizing the president to take military action in Syria.

Washington (CNN) - Ed Markey was sworn in Tuesday as the newest member of the U.S. Senate.

But Markey, 67, is anything but a rookie on Capitol Hill. The Democrat from Massachusetts was in his 20th term in the House of Representatives before winning election last month to the Senate.

No shocker this time as Democrats hold Senate seat

(CNN) - This time, history didn't repeat itself.

Democratic Rep. Ed Markey Tuesday won a special U.S. Senate election in Massachusetts, topping Republican businessman and former Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez in an election marked by low voter turnout.

The contest was the second time in three years that Massachusetts voters headed to the polls in a special U.S. Senate election with national implications.

Poll: Markey expands his lead in Mass. Senate race

(CNN) – A new poll indicates Democratic Rep. Ed Markey has slightly widened his advantage over Republican opponent Gabriel Gomez in the campaign for the June 25 special election for a U.S. Senate seat in Massachusetts.

The longtime congressman leads Gomez by 11 points, 54%-43%, among likely voters who are leaning toward a candidate, according to the new Boston Globe survey, released Sunday.

Another big name Democrat heading to Massachusetts

(CNN) – With Election Day in the special Senate contest in Massachusetts closing in, and the polls relatively tight, another top Democrat will make the trek to the Bay State next week to try and keep the long-held seat in party hands.

Vice President Joe Biden will campaign for Rep. Ed Markey, a Markey campaign adviser confirms to CNN. The news was first reported by the Boston Globe.

(CNN) – Traveling to Boston Wednesday to help reinforce Rep. Ed Markey's bid for U.S. Senate, President Barack Obama said the longtime Democratic congressman would join a slate of Massachusetts senators known for achieving big things.

"Here in Massachusetts you have a long history of sending smart, though, hardworking leaders to the Senate who roll up their sleeves and fight the great battles on behalf of middle class families and everyone who's trying to get into the middle class," Obama told an enthusiastic crowd, adding later: "I need Ed Markey in the U.S. Senate."

Biden on Mass. election: Without Obama on ticket, minority turnout will be low

(CNN) – Vice President Joe Biden said Tuesday night the minority turnout in Massachusetts' upcoming Senate election may be low because President Barack Obama is not at the top of the ticket.

According to pool reports, Biden also offered stinging criticism of the Republican Party at the fundraiser, especially of two first-term senators: Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas and Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky.

Springfield, Massachusetts (CNN) - Democratic Rep. Ed Markey and Republican newcomer Gabriel Gomez squared off in their second of three debates Tuesday night, two weeks before the special election and just as recent polls indicate the contest is tightening up.

In a sometimes fiery exchange that veered from the issue of digital privacy to the contested Keystone pipeline, both candidates often reverted back to negative attacks.

Markey still up in Massachusetts Senate battle

(CNN) – Rep. Ed Markey still leads his Republican rival in the battle for Massachusetts' open Senate seat, according to a poll released Monday, though his margin has shrunk in the final weeks of the campaign.

The Suffolk University survey showed Markey, a longtime Democratic congressman from the Bay State, ahead of Gabriel Gomez 48%-41%. Gomez is a businessman and former Navy SEAL. Previous polls have consistently given Markey the edge, including a seventeen-point advantage in one poll from early May.
