Obama ad: Romney is 'reckless' with foreign policy

(CNN) - As Mitt Romney delivers a foreign policy address Monday in Virginia, he'll be met with a new television ad by his opponent's re-election campaign that highlights the GOP nominee as "reckless" and "amateurish" on international affairs.

President Barack Obama's team released a new commercial that they say will run on Virginia airwaves, which criticizes Romney over his recent forays into foreign policy, including his foreign trip and comments on the Libya consulate attack.

Romney to deliver foreign policy speech

(CNN) - Mitt Romney will seek to bolster his foreign policy credentials in a major speech Monday, two weeks before the GOP presidential nominee takes part in a presidential debate focused on security.

In his remarks, set to take place at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Romney will address the ongoing unrest in Syria, calling for the U.S. to "work with our partners" to help the opposition and "ensure they obtain the arms they need."

Romney to deliver major foreign policy address next week

(CNN) – Mitt Romney will deliver a major speech on foreign policy Monday in Virginia, an aide to the Republican presidential nominee said on Wednesday, as new bloodshed emerged in Syria and fresh questions surfaced about President Barack Obama's administration's handling of the consulate attack in Libya.

The speech, which a source said would take place at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, comes after weeks in which foreign policy has taken a new role on the campaign trail. Romney has criticized Obama for his dealings with Iran and China, though he has remained largely silent on the lead-up and aftermath of the attack in Libya.

Romney slaps Obama in foreign policy op-ed

(CNN) - President Barack Obama's handling of events in the Middle East, including last month's attack on an American consulate in Libya, was the focus of a scathing op-ed from his challenger Mitt Romney Monday, and will continue to be a focus of his campaign's message, according to advisers to the GOP nominee.

The op-ed, which recycles much of what Romney has said on the stump and in interviews, asserts Obama has been weak in promoting American interests as various events unfold in the Middle East, including in Libya, Egypt, Syria and Iran. Romney has latched onto a comment Obama made during an interview in September calling incidents of unrest in the region "bumps in the road," saying it reflected a dangerous nonchalance toward serious issues of national security.

Briefing Bites: Was strike on Libyan consulate a 'terrorist attack'?

(CNN) - Both the Romney campaign and the Republican National Committee released statements Wednesday criticizing President Obama for not explicitly classifying the attacks on the U.S. consulate in Libya as “terrorist attacks” in public appearances over the past two weeks.

At the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, Obama called the violence, “attacks on America,” but stopped short of labeling the perpetrators as terrorists.

Romney lays out 'aid with trade' in major foreign policy speech

(CNN) – Mitt Romney sought to bolster his foreign policy credentials Tuesday, stressing his plan to strengthen aid to developing markets overseas through free enterprise and trade.

"The aim of a much larger share of our aid must be the promotion of work and the fostering of free enterprise. Nothing we can do as a nation will change lives and nations more effectively and permanently than sharing the insight that lies at the foundation of America's own economy," Romney said at the Clinton Global Initiative in New York City.

Paul Ryan rips Obama's foreign policy record

Lima, Ohio (CNN) – Rep. Paul Ryan offered a grim assessment of President Barack Obama's foreign policy record Monday, citing examples including the latest unrest in the Middle East that Mitt Romney's running mate warned "projects weakness" and threatens the nation's security.

"When the president came into office, he made these grand speeches, beautiful rhetoric, great promises, and he made the case that the power of his personality and his persuasion powers would calm things in the Muslim World, would make things, would make people respect us and like us that much more," Ryan said during a town hall in Ohio's Allen County.

Poll: More approve of Obama's response to embassy attack than Romney's

(CNN) – Americans who were closely following developments in last week's attacks on American diplomatic posts in Egypt and Libya were more likely to favorably rate President Barack Obama's handling of the dilemma than they were Mitt Romney's, according to a poll released Monday.

The survey from the Pew Research Center found 45% of Americans who said they were closely following the news approved of Obama's handling of the situation, compared to 26% who approved of Romney's statements. Conversely, 36% disapproved of Obama's handling of the situation, and 48% disapproved of Romney's response. Nineteen percent didn't have an opinion on Obama, and 26% couldn't rate Romney.

Where Obama, Romney stand on foreign policy challenges

Editor's note: Over the next week, CNN's national security reporters and producers will be looking at some of the most poignant differences between the two candidates on the most pressing foreign policy issues. Watch for the stories all week on CNN.

Washington (CNN) - The protests and violence at American diplomatic missions across the Middle East and North Africa last week steered the 2012 presidential race into somewhat unchartered territory - a debate over U.S. foreign policy.

While the topic certainly has not been absent in the rhetorical sparring between President Barack Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney, most of the campaign's focus thus far has been a battle over who has the best prescription to jolt a seemingly sluggish economic recovery.
