Gabby Giffords to rally for background checks

Washington (CNN) - The gun control group founded by former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, critically wounded in a January 2011 shooting, and her husband Mark Kelly is trying to rally support for the two senators who this week unveiled a bi-partisan bill to dramatically expand background checks for gun buyers.

The group, Americans for Responsible Solutions, is sponsoring robocalls into Pennsylvania, the home states of Republican Sen. Pat Toomey and West Virginia, the home state of Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin which asks the public to help get the bill passed. Kelly recorded the soundtrack for the calls.

A pop, a flash and a life forever changed: Giffords' comeback and gun debate

Tucson, Arizona (CNN) – Gabby Giffords remembers facing her assailant at his sentencing.

"Beady eyes," she said of Jared Loughner, who shot the former Arizona congresswoman in the head with a 9mm Glock pistol. Six people died and 13 were injured that day when the deranged gunman opened fire in front of a Tucson supermarket.

Gabby Giffords coming to Washington next week

Washington (CNN) – Gabby Giffords is planning to come to Washington, D.C., next week, just as the Senate will be immersed in debate over new gun legislation, which she has been lobbying senators to support.

Giffords, who plans to travel with husband Mark Kelly, will attend an unveiling of a bust of Gabe Zimmerman, one of her former aides who was killed along with 5 others the day she was shot in 2011.

'Stronger, better, tougher': Giffords improves, but she'll never be the same

Tucson, Arizona (CNN) - What is most shocking about Gabby Giffords now is how much she looks like her old self. Her golden locks are back, so is the sparkle in her eyes and her broad smile. Gone is the short hair and thin frame we saw at the beginning of her recovery.

Yet she knows she will never be the same.

Gabby Giffords still appreciates gun culture

(CNN) - Former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords was nearly killed more than 2 years ago by a man with a gun. Today, her brain injuries make speaking difficult, and yet she has become an active spokeswoman for new restrictions on guns.

Ironically she has not lost her love of guns. Target practice is still a form of entertainment at her mother's house deep in the Arizona desert. Her husband Mark Kelly uses pots and water bottles as targets, while Giffords watches from the patio with her mother cheering him on.

Graham won't join gun legislation filibuster

(CNN) - Sen. Lindsey Graham does not support extending background checks to gun sales between two individuals, nor does he think such a bill would pass the Senate, but he said Sunday he will not hold the measure up with a filibuster

"The only way I would filibuster a bill is if Sen. (Harry) Reid did not allow alternative amendments," the South Carolina Republican said on CNN's "State of the Union with Candy Crowley."

Gabby Giffords' husband buys assault weapon

(CNN) – Mark Kelly, the husband of former Rep. Gabby Giffords and an outspoken advocate for new gun control measures, purchased an AR-15 assault rifle in Tucson recently as a demonstration of what he says are unobtrusive background checks.

The retired space shuttle commander wrote on his Facebook page he would turn in the weapon – which he said he hadn't yet obtained - to the city's police department.
