McGovern remembered as politician, humanitarian, man of conscience

(CNN) - George McGovern accomplished more than most could ever dream in his lifetime: as a war hero, a congressman and presidential nominee.

But he was so much more than all that, his family and friends said at the late senator's memorial service Friday in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

George McGovern, an unabashed liberal voice, is dead

(CNN) – George Stanley McGovern, a staunch liberal who served South Dakota in the U.S. Senate and House for more than two decades and who ran unsuccessfully as the Democratic Party nominee for president in 1972, died Sunday at the age of 90, his family said.

"Our wonderful father, George McGovern, passed away peacefully at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD, surrounded by our family and life-long friends," his family said in a statement.

McGovern on life support in hospice, family says

(CNN) – Former Democratic presidential candidate George McGovern was on life support and "no longer responsive" on Wednesday, two days after he was admitted to a hospice, his family said.

The 90-year-old former U.S. senator from South Dakota suffers from a variety of ailments "that have worsened over recent months" due to age, the McGovern family said in a statement issued Wednesday afternoon.

George McGovern admitted to hospice

(CNN) - Former presidential nominee and Sen. George McGovern has been admitted to a hospice in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, a spokeswoman for the facility said Monday.

"The family of Sen. McGovern wishes to extend their gratitude and appreciation for the many prayers and well wishes and requests complete privacy at this time," said Lindsey Meyers, spokeswoman for Avera McKennan Hospital and University Health Center.

George McGovern hospitalized in Florida

(CNN) - Former Democratic presidential nominee George McGovern, 89, was admitted to a Florida hospital on Tuesday, CNN has confirmed.

The liberal icon is being evaluated for "brief transient spells where he passes out and becomes verbally unresponsive," his family said in a statement.
