Bush 41 on tax pledges: 'Who the hell is Grover Norquist, anyway?'

(CNN) – Former President George H. W. Bush said politicians can't be "wedded to some formula by Grover Norquist" when asked about his own experience breaking the now infamous "no new taxes" pledge during his presidency.

Discussing Norquist's no new taxes "Taxpayer Protection Pledge" in a Parade Magazine cover story to be published Sunday, Bush responded with his detestation for the "rigidity of those pledges." Many Republicans have signed on to Norquist's pledge not to raise taxes, including presumptive GOP nominee, Mitt Romney. Norquist is head of the Americans for Tax Reform group and a long-time fixture in Washington as a conservative anti-tax advocate.

Democrats pounce on Norquist visit to Capitol Hill

Washington (CNN) - The person who Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid calls "the most powerful man in Washington" - and who "has the entire Republican Party in the palm of his hand" - visited Capitol Hill Thursday for a briefing with House GOP members and their aides.

But even before anti-tax crusader Grover Norquist entered the ornate Ways and Means Committee hearing room to talk about tax reform on Thursday, Democrats pounced, saying his appearance proves the GOP is beholden to one man's uncompromising position against any tax increases. They also sought to highlight recent reports that Norquist may be losing some support among Republicans.

Norquist defends tax pledge following Jeb Bush remarks

(CNN) - Grover Norquist, the man behind a high-profile anti-tax pledge, said former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush insulted GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Friday by voicing his opposition to the Norquist-backed pledge.

"He kind of stepped in it a little bit," Norquist said of Bush, who spoke before a House Budget Committee hearing on Friday.

Bachmann, Norquist endorse Mourdock

(CNN) - Add Rep. Michele Bachmann and anti-tax crusader Grover Norquist to the growing list of national conservatives supporting Richard Mourdock in his quest to unseat Sen. Dick Lugar of Indiana.

On Twitter, Bachmann announced Wednesday her endorsement of the Indiana state treasurer, less than a week before Mourdock and Lugar face off in the Republican primary.

Norquist: Democrats are lying

(CNN) - Notorious anti-tax crusader Grover Norquist said Democrats who've blamed him for the super committee's bipartisan budget gridlock are simply lying.

The president of Americans for Tax Reform encouraged Republican members of the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction to sign a pledge that binds them to resist raising taxes as they work to find $1.2 trillion dollars in deficit-cutting measures by Wednesday, but on CNN's "American Morning," he said the pledge was between the country and its congressmen, and not with him.

Boehner calls anti-tax crusader Norquist 'some random person'

Washington (CNN) - House Speaker John Boehner downplayed the influence of Washington's most notable anti-tax crusader, calling Grover Norquist "some random person" at his weekly press conference Thursday.

Asked about Norquist, who heads the powerful Americans for Tax Reform (ATR) group, Boehner said, "it's not often I'm asked about some random person in America and what I think."

Conservative group backs Cain's '9-9-9' plan

Washington (CNN) - A leading fiscal conservative group, Club for Growth, supported Herman Cain's '9-9-9' tax plan Friday, saying it would pave the way to an "economic boom."

"Herman Cain's proposal might not be the perfect plan, but it is a truly revolutionary tax reform that would amount to a massive job creating tax cut on investments, savings, and income," said Club for Growth President Chris Chocola.

Pledge writers pressure lawmakers to toe line in debt crisis

Washington (CNN) – With the clock ticking down until the U.S. hits its debt ceiling, conservative and progressive third-party interest groups whose pledges lawmakers have signed their names to are ratcheting up the pressure to keep them in line.

One of the biggest sticking points in negotiating a deal to raise the debt ceiling while addressing the long-term deficit has been Republican demands that there be corresponding dollar-for-dollar cuts in federal spending, that taxes cannot be increased to pay down the deficit, or that a balanced budget amendment is the only way to get the government on a path to longer-term fiscal health.

Anti-tax leader sides with Obama on raising debt ceiling beyond 2012

(CNN) - The head of a conservative group that has backed a high-profile pledge to oppose any tax increase told CNN on Friday that he would support effectively lifting the debt ceiling through the 2012 presidential election.

Grover Norquist, the president of Americans for Tax Reform, spoke shortly after House Speaker John Boehner abruptly ended debt talks with the White House, in part due to his claim that President Barack Obama was insisting that "taxes have to be raised."

Grover Norquist: The man who drew the GOP's 'line in the sand'

Washington (CNN) – At the heart of the contentious talks between the White House and congressional Republicans on whether to raise the debt ceiling is a simple, one-sentence document many conservative lawmakers have signed, pledging not to increase taxes.

Ever.

"I _____ pledge to the taxpayers of the state of _____ and all the people of this state, that I will oppose and vote against all efforts to increase taxes," reads the version of the pledge signed by Republican lawmakers.
