Giffords and Kelly touring to revive background checks

(CNN) – Former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and husband Mark Kelly are hitting the road to try bolstering support for extending background checks on gun sales, a prospect that failed earlier this year but that gun control supporters have vowed to continue pursuing.

The week-long "Rights and Responsibilities Tour," which begins July 1, will "rally supporters and remind elected officials that our cherished Second Amendment rights demand great responsibility," according to a press release from Kelly and Giffords' gun control group Americans for Responsible Solutions.

In fight against NRA, Manchin says he’s not afraid

(CNN) – Sen. Joe Manchin is firing back after the National Rifle Association targeted the conservative Democrat in a television commercial last week.

The senator from West Virginia said Thursday morning the NRA is using "paranoia" to keep lawmakers from making big moves on gun control, following the Newtown elementary school shooting in December that left 20 children and six adults dead.

Bloomberg group sorry for reading Boston bomber's name

(CNN) – The group pushing for tighter restrictions on guns that's partly funded by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg apologized Wednesday after accused Boston bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev's name was read at an event memorializing gun victims.

Noting they were using a list compiled by Slate.com of people killed by guns since December's school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Mayors Against Illegal Guns said in a statement Tsarnaev "was absolutely not a victim, his name should have been deleted before the list was provided to a family member for reading and his name should never have been read. It was a mistake, it should not have happened and we sincerely apologize."

Biden warns legislators: 'Country has changed' on gun violence

(CNN) - In remarks Tuesday touting the Obama administration's progress in addressing gun safety, Vice President Joe Biden vowed to revisit gun control legislation that failed in the U.S. Senate earlier this year, and warned legislators that the political climate shifted after the mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut last December.

"The one thing that each of us have been saying to our colleagues about these votes is the country has changed," Biden said. "You will pay a price, a political price for not – for not getting engaged and dealing with gun safety."

Bloomberg to donors: Stop supporting Democrats against background checks

(CNN) – Michael Bloomberg's quest to enact stricter gun control measures continued Wednesday with a request from the billionaire New York City mayor to top Democratic donors: Stop supporting Senate incumbents who voted against a measure in April that would have bolstered background check requirements on gun sales.

Those Democratic senators – Mark Begich of Alaska, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, Mark Pryor of Arkansas and Max Baucus of Montana (who's not running for re-election) – "sided with a gun lobby increasingly out of touch with Americans' priorities," Bloomberg wrote in his letter.

Biden on mental health: It's okay to talk about it

Updated at 4:19 p.m. on Monday 6/3

(CNN) – In closing remarks at the White House's National Conference on Mental Health Monday, Vice President Joe Biden delivered an emotional plea to those struggling with mental illness and their families.

"Let's use this moment to send a message to tens of millions of Americans especially the young people and the parents of young people all over this country," Biden said, speaking quietly. "There is nothing, nothing to be ashamed of if you are struggling with mental issues or if your child is or your spouse or your friend. It's okay. It's okay to talk about it. It's okay to ask for help. It is okay to acknowledge that it is frightening."
