Barbour hires key adviser, plans N.H. trip

Washington (CNN) – Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour has hired a key political operative and is planning to visit New Hampshire later this month, as he inches closer to a campaign for the Republican presidential nomination.

Michael Dennehy, a veteran of New Hampshire politics, has signed on as an adviser to Barbour's political action committee, Haley's PAC. It is a significant addition to Barbour's political operation as Dennehy is widely respected as an influential operator who oversaw Sen. John McCain's Granite State primary campaigns in 2000 and 2008.

"I start off with hardly any Americans who really know me. There are some political leaders, some elected officials, some reporters, but the average American has no reason to have ever heard of Haley Barbour," the governor said Tuesday during an interview with Radio Iowa.

Barbour: Obama's policy 'is to drive up energy prices'

Washington (CNN) – With price of gasoline rising for the eighth consecutive day, Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour accused the Obama administration of hiking energy costs in an effort to promote alternative fuels.

"In 2008, four dollar gasoline brought my state to its knees, before Wall Street melted down, and we have blown through three dollars a gallon on our way to four," Barbour, a Republican who is seriously considering a White House bid, said Wednesday in a speech to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
