Obama’s vacation came amidst fiscal wrangling

(CNN) - About 90 minutes after publicly berating lawmakers for failing to reach a fiscal cliff deal before the holidays, President Barack Obama flew out of Washington. He landed in Hawaii 11 hours later - over 4,000 miles from Capitol Hill, and where the temperature was a balmy 80 degrees, twice what it was in Washington.

"As we leave town for a few days, I hope it gives everyone perspective," he said in those remarks on December 21, two weeks ago. "Everybody can drink some eggnog, have some Christmas cookies, sing some Christmas carols, enjoy the company of loved ones."

The power of the (auto) pen

Honolulu, Hawaii (CNN) - If you are a president who desperately wants to salvage your Hawaiian vacation, why stick around Washington to sign a bill when an automatic pen can do it for you?

That’s what happened Wednesday when the long-haggled over bill to avert the fiscal cliff was delivered to the White House for the president’s signature. With Obama 5,000 miles away in Hawaii, aides decided to prepare the president with an electronic version of the document for his review rather than commission a special flight to currier over the document.

Schatz sworn in as U.S. senator from Hawaii

Washington (CNN) - Hawaii's newest senator was nominated, appointed, and sworn into his seat so quickly he had to scramble to get himself ready for the red-eye flight to Washington.

"I bought this coat yesterday," Brian Schatz told reporters after landing on the mainland dressed in an overcoat - hardly necessary in Hawaii, where temperatures were in the low 70s on Thursday.

(CNN) – The remains of Sen. Daniel Inouye from Hawaii arrived in Washington Thursday to lie in state in the Rotunda of the United States Capitol. Vice President Joe Biden and congressional leaders delivered remarks at the arrival ceremony.

Inouye was awarded the Medal of Honor for actions during World War II and represented Hawaii in the Senate for five decades. The Democratic senator died Monday at the age of 88 after being hospitalized for "respiratory complications."

He won his ninth consecutive term in 2010 and was the second-longest-serving member of the Senate in its history, trailing only Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia. Inouye was a senator for all but three of Hawaii's 53 years as a state and had served as its first House member before that.
