Steven Ybarra attends the convention in Denver.
DENVER (CNN) — Steven Ybarra, who made headlines in May when he asked for a million dollar plus payout for his vote during the contentious Democratic primaries, now says that Barack Obama's campaign will commit nearly $20 million towards Hispanic outreach. Ybarra, attending the Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado, this week, said he hopes the Obama camp will allocate $10 million towards media buys and $10 million in grass roots Hispanic outreach including voter registration, community events. Ybarra is a superdelegate and member of the California Democratic Party State Central Committee, which has nearly 3,000 members. Ybarra said Tuesday that he never demanded a payout. "I never actually said I would sell my vote. What I was saying was there's no reason for me to vote for any candidate that¹s not ready to commit to my community," he said. A new poll out Thursday shows strong support for Sen. Barack Obama among Latinos.
WASHINGTON (CNN) — A new poll released Thursday shows overwhelming support from Latinos for Sen. Barack Obama over Sen. John McCain. Obama's approval rating with registered Latino voters, the nationwide Pew Hispanic Center poll found, is at 66 percent versus 23 percent favoring McCain. Obama's "strong showing in this survey represents a sharp reversal in his fortunes from the primaries, when Obama lost the Latino vote to Hillary Clinton by a margin of nearly 2-to-1," according to Pew Hispanic Center associate director Mark Hugo Lopez. Obama's favorability among Latinos is slightly up from a Gallup Poll summary of surveys taken in May, which showed Obama with 62 percent of Latino voters nationwide, compared with 29 percent for McCain. "He now appears to be even more popular than Hillary Clinton among Latinos," Lopez said. Filed under: Barack Obama Hispanic Latinos October 12, 2007

WASHINGTON (CNN) – The Hispanic vote is key to winning Nevada in 2008, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid told reporters Thursday in a conference call. And the Nevada Democrat predicted that this important voting bloc will back his party’s presidential nominee next year. Reid claimed the Democratic Party’s outreach efforts to the Hispanic community, as well as the Republican Party’s stand on immigration reform will drive Hispanic voters away from the GOP.
