Democrats pounce on Norquist visit to Capitol Hill

Washington (CNN) - The person who Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid calls "the most powerful man in Washington" - and who "has the entire Republican Party in the palm of his hand" - visited Capitol Hill Thursday for a briefing with House GOP members and their aides.

But even before anti-tax crusader Grover Norquist entered the ornate Ways and Means Committee hearing room to talk about tax reform on Thursday, Democrats pounced, saying his appearance proves the GOP is beholden to one man's uncompromising position against any tax increases. They also sought to highlight recent reports that Norquist may be losing some support among Republicans.

Democrats continue to accuse GOP of a 'war on women'

Washington (CNN) – House Democrats pummeled Republicans Tuesday, accusing them of playing politics with domestic abuse legislation.

"We want every member of the House Judiciary Committee to realize that this attack on women is going to be noted across the United States of America," said Rep. John Conyers of Michigan, the top Democrat on the committee, during a Capitol Hill press conference.

Democratic Rep. tells personal story of rape, hits GOP war against women

Washington (CNN) – It is not something you expect to hear on the floor of the House of Representatives – a lawmaker recounting a remarkably personal story of being raped.

Rep. Gwen Moore, D-Wisconsin, talked about what she called "terrible memories" of high school boys making a bet in the locker room that she "couldn't be had."

Pelosi aims to draw contrast with GOP on contraception policy

Washington (CNN) – Aiming to draw a sharp contrast with a Republican-organized hearing a week ago that included an all-male panel of witnesses, House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi convened her Policy Committee Thursday to talk about the president's new contraception rule and featured a single witness – the woman the GOP wouldn't allow to testify.

Pelosi mocked House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa's explanation for rejecting the Democrats' chosen witness for last week's hearing - Sandra Fluke, a law student. He argued she wasn't qualified to appear on the panel because the subject was meant to be about religious freedom, not birth control or health care policy.

Justices hear appeal over Texas redistricting map

Washington (CNN) - Election politics almost always creates unhappy drama for the Supreme Court's nine members, and a thorny appeal heard Monday from Texas officials over the state's controversial redistricting plan more than proved the point.

The court struggled mostly in vain to try and get its arms around a complex, time-sensitive dispute. At issue are competing maps for the Texas state legislature and Congress - created first by Republican lawmakers that favored their political base and later by a federal judicial panel to give minorities greater voting power.

Obama calls Boehner, Reid to push two-month payroll tax extension

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama called House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid Wednesday as part of an ongoing - and so far unsuccessful - effort to resolve a partisan standoff over how best to extend the expiring payroll tax cut, according to the White House.

A two-month extension passed overwhelmingly with bipartisan support by the Democratic-controlled Senate "is the only option to ensure that middle class families aren't hit with a tax hike in 10 days and gives both sides the time needed to work out a full year solution," White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters.

Both parties tout $$ in fight for House control

Washington (CNN) - In the battle for control of the House of Representatives, both major parties' re-election committees have something to brag about as the 2012 election year nears.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Tuesday said that they brought in $4.1 million in November, out-raising their GOP counterpart, the National Republican Congressional Committee, by $1 million. The DCCC also pointed out that they out-raised the NRCC for the year by nearly $4.5 million–all of this despite being the minority party in Congress.
