Climate group attacks Ernst on tax pledge, not climate

Updated 4:40 p.m. ET, 7/30/2014

(CNN) - NextGen Climate, a Super PAC backed by liberal billionaire Tom Steyer, is dedicated to "act politically to avert climate disaster and preserve American prosperity."

But its latest attack ad is all about taxes.

The group says the television commercial, which was released Wednesday, will air in three major media markets across Iowa. But the spot never once mentions climate change or the environment. Instead the ad focuses on the Americans for Tax Reform's "no new taxes" pledge Iowa GOP Senate nominee Joni Ernst signed.

Christie now says he supports Hobby Lobby ruling

(CNN) - After first declining to take a position on the decision earlier this month, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said Thursday he backs the Supreme Court's ruling in favor of Hobby Lobby in its case against Obamacare.

Asked about his thoughts on the case at a campaign stop in Iowa, Christie unveiled his support.

Christie: N.J. may consider housing kids from southern border influx

(CNN) – New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie blamed the Obama administration for the influx of immigrant children at the southern border, but didn't rule out the prospect of accepting children in New Jersey on a case-by-case basis.

"I have great empathy for that situation, but frankly the administration has done an awful job in securing our border, and they need to do that," Christie told reporters in Marion, Iowa, where he campaigned for incumbent Gov. Terry Branstad.

2016 hovers over Christie Iowa trip

(CNN) - Chris Christie's jam packed swing through Iowa on Thursday is advertised as being all about the 2014 midterm elections.

But the visit by the Republican governor of New Jersey and potential GOP presidential contender has plenty of 2016 implications, as Christie tries to get beyond the bridge controversy back home in the Garden State that's diminished his political standing.

Christie comes under attack as he heads to Iowa

(CNN) - Two days before New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie heads to Iowa, a conservative group is launching digital ads that slam the potential 2016 Republican presidential contender over his Garden State record on judicial nominations.

Longing for a win, GOP gives Senate hopeful a big microphone

Washington (CNN) - If you're a national political party salivating over the prospect of winning a seat that's long been in your opponent's hands, what should you do?

One strategy: give your candidate a huge megaphone.

Enter the Republican National Committee, Iowa GOP Senate nominee Joni Ernst - and an address heard by millions around the country.

On Saturday, Ernst delivered the weekly Republican address. The candidate pushed familiar conservative themes: smaller government, opposition to Obamacare and strong national security. Ernst also played up her outsider status and pushed populist themes.

Rick Perry's busy summer schedule

(CNN) - Rick Perry's headed back to South Carolina Tuesday and Wednesday.

It's the third trip by the longtime Republican governor of Texas to the Palmetto State in the past year. Perry, who launched a failed campaign for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination, is not running for re-election this year and instead is considering another bid for the White House in 2016.

Tight race and unusual gender gap in Iowa Senate battle

(CNN) - It's pretty much all tied up in a crucial Senate contest that could decide whether the Republicans take control of the chamber in November's midterm elections, according to a new poll.

A Quinnipiac University survey of Iowa voters released Wednesday indicates Democratic Rep. Bruce Braley with a slight 44%-40% edge over GOP state Sen. Joni Ernst in the battle to succeed longtime Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin, who is retiring at the end of the year. If the Republicans can flip Harkin's seat and five other Democratic held seats, they would win control of the Senate.

(CNN) – Traveling to the first caucus state of 2016, where presidential candidates will meet a much-anticipated test, three potential Republican candidates took the stage Saturday at the Iowa GOP state convention to tout conservative principles and a new GOP message.

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, declared that if the GOP sticks to conservative principles, it will “be the dominant party again.”

Gap emerges between GOP favorites and potential winners in Iowa

(CNN) - The new Des Moines Register survey makes one thing clear: Iowa Republicans don't think their favorite potential candidate for the GOP presidential nomination in 2016 could win a national election.

The poll ranked GOP Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, the 2012 Republican vice presidential nominee and chairman of the powerful House Budget Committee, first in favorability among 11 Republicans considering bids  for the GOP nomination.
