U.S. soldiers patrol parts of Iraq in armored tanks years after the start of the war in Iraq.
(CNN) – While economic issues affect almost all Americans, public interest in the ongoing military action in Iraq has dropped off over the past few years as conditions on the ground there have improved and the relevance to the average American family's pocketbook wears thin. "This is already one of the longest wars in American history. There's nothing new in Iraq," said Steven Roberts, a professor of media studies at The George Washington University. "We've read the stories of instability in the government a hundred times. Every single possible story has been told, and so there is enormous fatigue about Iraq." But while daily operations in Iraq may not pique the attention of Americans, the costs do. Around $700 billion, according to the Congressional Budget Office, has been appropriated from the 2003-2009 fiscal years. The figure, taking into account operations for 2010 FY, puts the price tag around $800 billion. Filed under: Iraq Troop Withdrawal Iraq war military September 20, 2008

Howard Forsythe.
ABOARD THE ELECTION EXPRESS: Cambridge, OH (CNN) - There was a farmer’s market under way on the courthouse square as we pulled into town, and across the street Howard Forsythe, 73, was walking into the bank to take care of some personal business. We talked for a few minutes about the first presidential debate next week, and he said that if he were somehow allowed to ask the candidates one question, it would be this:
“What are you going to do about the fact that we’re going to have to initiate a military draft again?”
He said that it’s the one subject politicians are afraid to touch– and he believes that most government leaders in Washington realize a draft is inevitable, but refuse to admit it to voters.
"Our military is so stripped right now," he said. "Families are being torn apart, soldiers are being sent for two and three tours of duty, and no one will say out loud what they know in their hearts– that the draft is coming back."
He said he wished he could come along with us to Mississippi for the debate next week, and somehow, despite the event’s rules, be allowed to ask the question.
“I know what the answer from both of them would be,” he said. “They’d say they think we can do all right without a draft. But a draft is the only solution, and I’d like to look in their eyes as they pretended that it isn’t.”

President Bush announced that he plans to withdraw 8,000 U.S. troops from Iraq by February, 2009 .
RIVERSIDE, Ohio (CNN) – Senator Barack Obama said Tuesday the Bush administration’s announcement it was bringing some U.S. troops home fell short, calling it a “modest” step that indicated no real change in policy. “At this point what it appears is the next president will inherit a status quo that is still unstable, Obama told reporters at a high school outside Dayton. “And what’s going to be required is a comprehensive strategy, and that’s what I’ve been offering for the last two years. “We should have a comprehensive strategy for bringing this war to a close and not what we heard from president today, which is essentially some tinkering around the edges and kicking the can down the road to the next president.” Obama gave lukewarm praise to the president’s announcement that more U.S. troops will be sent to Afghanistan, something the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee routinely calls for in his stump speech. “I am glad that the President is moving in the direction of the policy that I have advocated for years. But the most substantial increase will come when an additional Army brigade is deployed five months from now – in February, after the President has left office. His plan comes up short – it is not enough troops, and not enough resources, with not enough urgency,” he said. Filed under: Barack Obama Iraq Troop Withdrawal |
