(CNN) - Three days before the State of the Union address, President Barack Obama and Texas Rep. Jeb Hensarling on Saturday offered what could be previews of their parties' messages next week.
In the GOP weekly address, Hensarling bashed the record of Obama's three-year administration, criticizing the state of unemployment, gas prices, and national debt under his watch.

Washington (CNN) – The Republican co-chair of the so-called “super committee” trying to forge a major deficit reduction deal said Sunday that a two-step process is possible in which the bipartisan panel sets a figure for increased revenue from tax reform that congressional committees then set in legislation.
Texas Rep. Jeb Hensarling told CNN’s “State of the Union” that he remains hopeful for a comprehensive deal, but he made clear that an alternative could leave it to Congress to figure out how to implement results agreed upon by the 12-member panel made up of equal numbers of House and Senate Democrats and Republicans.

(CNN) – Two top Republican lawmakers said Wednesday they don't support extending a payroll tax cut as a way to stimulate the economy -an idea the White House is weighing– because they don't believe it helped create jobs and that money is needed to shore up Social Security and Medicare.
Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tennessee, and Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, who both hold GOP leadership positions, told reporters that the current high unemployment rate is proof that short-term stimulus programs, like the payroll tax reduction, don't work.
