Manchin may buck party in presidential vote

(CNN) – As a Democrat in conservative West Virginia, Sen. Joe Manchin has sought to make his independence clear.

And that independence might just extend all the way to the November voting booth, as the senator – who is up for re-election - said in a report published Thursday that he might not cast a ballot for the top name on his party's ticket, President Barack Obama.

West Virginia gubernatorial election in national spotlight

(CNN) - Voters head to the polls in West Virginia on Tuesday in a gubernatorial contest in which national Republicans are trying to tie the Democratic governor to President Barack Obama. And the contest is firmly in the national political spotlight, thanks to an infusion of big bucks that has fueled campaign ad wars over the past three weeks.

The acting governor, Earl Ray Tomblin, faces off against businessman Bill Maloney, the Republican nominee. Tomblin, the long-serving state Senate president, took over as governor last autumn after then-Gov. Joe Manchin, a fellow Democrat, was elected to fill the term of the late Sen. Robert Byrd. Besides Maloney and Tomblin, three independent or third-party candidates are on the ballot. The winner will fill out the final year of Manchin's gubernatorial term.

(CNN) - With six days left until a gubernatorial election in West Virginia, it seems Democrats are bringing out the big gun.

In the final television commercial of his campaign, Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin is going up on West Virginia airwaves Wednesday with an ad that highlights the support he's getting from Sen. Joe Manchin, a fellow Democrat, former governor, and one of the most popular politicians in the state.

Senate Democrat backs bill to cap government spending

Washington (CNN) - Ratcheting up the pressure on Democratic leaders to accept steep cuts in government spending, freshman Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia said Tuesday he would back a bill that places strict caps on spending enforced by automatic cuts if those caps were breached.

The move by the moderate Democrat, who is up for re-election in a swing state, is evidence of the acute sensitivity many Democrats have about the politically charged issue of reducing government debt. Top Senate Democrats oppose spending caps as too inflexible. Manchin's announcement could weaken Democratic leaders in their negotiations with Republicans over the coming weeks about how to cut spending and curb the nation's debt.

Senator urges lawmakers to give up pay if there's a shutdown

Washington (CNN) – Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia says he'll forgo his pay if there's a federal government shutdown, and he's urging his colleagues in Congress as well as the president and vice president to join him in voluntarily giving up their salaries.

"While millions of American families will be impacted by a government shutdown- whether they are serving our country's military, whether someone in their family is furloughed or whether they are unable to use critical government services – elected officials are the one group who will not be impacted. Just the opposite, in fact: we still get paid," says Manchin, in a letter circulated to fellow lawmakers. "How does that make any sense?"

Dem senator breaks with his party and Obama, again

(CNN) - Saying that "we must get our fiscal house in order," Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia says he'll vote against raising the nation's debt ceiling unless it's married to a plan that addresses the nation's broader fiscal problems.

The announcement Monday by Manchin is the latest example of the governor-turned-senator who's up for re-election next year being at odds with his party and President Obama on fiscal matters.
