IRS drops the ball in game with GOP Senator

Washington (CNN) – The Internal Revenue Service's softball team, the "Cheetahs," were scheduled to play Republican Senator John Cornyn's softball on Friday. The Cheetah's backed out.

"We contacted them to confirm our game which was scheduled for tomorrow night, and they said they needed to reschedule," Cornyn's Press Secretary Drew Brandewie said. "Guess they needed an extension."

Top Senate Republican doubts damage from defense cuts

Washington (CNN) - Anticipating possible political backlash if forced federal spending cuts kick in as expected later this week, the Senate's No. 2 Republican said Monday that he is preparing a message he plans to hit hard: The cuts are not going to have as negative an impact as the Pentagon and others in the Obama administration are saying.

Sen. John Cornyn of Texas said he plans to make the case to other Republicans and the public that despite warnings from the Pentagon that the mandated cuts will be devastating, the overall amount of defense spending will actually still rise.

Cornyn 'increasingly pessimistic' about deal

(CNN) – While President Barack Obama said Wednesday he hopes to reach a deficit-reduction deal by Christmas, Republican Sen. John Cornyn of Texas didn't sound too confident that such an agreement will be made by year's end, meaning many tax increases and spending cuts would automatically kick in at the start of 2013.

"I'm increasingly pessimistic, not optimistic, because the president seems to be campaigning rather than going anywhere and doing anything to get a deal," Cornyn said on CNN's "Erin Burnett OutFront." "If we don't get a deal, it will hurt a lot of people."

Despite election losses, GOP Sen. Cornyn poised for promotion

(CNN) - Despite a disappointing showing by Republican Senate candidates on Election Day, the man who spearheaded the GOP Senate election effort is poised to take the number two position in the party's leadership behind Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, several GOP aides told CNN.

Sen. John Cornyn of Texas is expected next Wednesday to be elected by members of the Republican caucus to become the Minority Whip. He will replace retiring Sen. Jon Kyl of Arizona.

GOP campaign arm bails on Akin's Senate bid, source says

(CNN) - The National Republican Senatorial Committee will no longer support Rep. Todd Akin of Missouri in his U.S. Senate bid, a source from the group told CNN Senior Congressional Correspondent Dana Bash on Monday.

It was communicated to the congressman that the NRSC will be pulling out if he decides to stay in the race, the source said one day after the Senate candidate sparked a firestorm by claiming that "legitimate rape" rarely resulted in pregnancy.

Senators in agreement: Senate isn't working

Washington (CNN) – Two leading senators from opposing political sides agreed on Sunday that the major issues facing the upper chamber, like taxes and spending, will not be addressed before the November elections. But they disagreed on who deserves the blame.

"I think that's an honest appraisal," Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois said on CNN's "State of the Union," when asked if it was true the Senate would stall on such topics before the 2012 election.

Key GOP senators steer clear of Gingrich's Medicare swipe

Washington (CNN) - Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich's criticism of the House GOP plan for Medicare reform has opened a hornet's nest inside the party, but at least two influential Republicans are steering clear of the controversy.

"I don't comment on other candidates," Sen. John McCain, the last GOP nominee for president, said with a grin. "I spent a couple of years doing that."

Next battle in Congress heats up

Washington (CNN) - Republican Sen. John Cornyn said he will not vote to raise the debt ceiling unless it’s accompanied by systematic reforms to address long-term spending and the national debt.

“That's the price that's going to have to be paid, systemic reforms, in order to get Republican support for raising the debt ceiling, otherwise I think you are going to see Democrats having to do that all by themselves,” Cornyn said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
