V.P. contenders Portman, Ryan come together in Ohio

Oxford, Ohio (CNN) – A few days ago, Sen. Rob Portman was touted as being on the short list under consideration as Mitt Romney’s running mate. Despite being passed over when the nod went to Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, Portman was on hand and enthusiastic Wednesday at a GOP rally in Ohio featuring now-vice-presidential candidate Ryan.

Appearing together at Ryan’s alma mater - Miami University of Ohio - Portman praised the House Budget Committee chairman for his work on Capitol Hill and called him “a good friend.”

(CNN) – Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez and South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley - three women rumored to be under consideration as Mitt Romney's running mate - will have high profile speaking roles at the Republican National Convention, organizers will announce Monday.

Kasich: Obama economic policies are headwind

(CNN) – Ohio Gov. John Kasich, a Republican, said on CNN's "John King, USA" that President Barack Obama's economic policies have created "a wind in my face" as he had worked to grow the state's economy.

He suggested that the state's Republican senator, Rob Portman, would be a "great pick" for Mitt Romney's vice presidential candidate, but deflected the suggestion that he might run.

"I'm not even going to express no interest because that indicates interest," he said.
