Five things to know about this year's most important election

Richmond, Virginia (CNN) - The Virginia governor's race, billed as the marquee battle of an otherwise anticlimactic 2013 election cycle, is shaping up to be a foregone conclusion.

Democrat Terry McAuliffe, the longtime political fixer and moneyman, hasn't trailed in a poll since May. Barring a political miracle, Republican Ken Cuccinelli will be delivering a concession speech on Tuesday evening in Richmond.

Obama stumps for McAuliffe in Virginia governor’s race

Arlington, Virginia (CNN) - President Barack Obama sidestepped talking about his signature achievement, health care reform, and instead focused on the politics of the government shutdown in a campaign rally to help Virginia Democrat Terry McAuliffe get over the finish line in Tuesday's governor's race.

McAuliffe, a best friend of the Clinton family, has been ahead of Republican Ken Cuccinelli, even if marginally, in every poll of the race taken since mid-July. A victory here Tuesday night could provide some cover to the Obama administration, which has been under fire for a month for the botched roll-out of the Affordable Care Act's sign-up website for the insurance exchange system October 1.

And with four days to go until Election Day 2013, the survey from the Wason Center for Public Policy at Christopher Newport University indicates that the third party candidate in the race could be the deciding factor in the outcome of the election.

In final round of Virginia gubernatorial debates, candidates keep up verbal slugging – neither scores knockout

(CNN) - In a race already peppered with heated rhetoric and negative campaign ads, the attacks did not let up in the third and final debate between the two candidates vying for Virginia’s governor.

Leading in the polls since the partial federal government shutdown, Democratic candidate Terry McAuliffe hit opponent Ken Cuccinelli over social issues like abortion and gay rights while Cuccinelli fought back, linking McAuliffe to Obamacare and its rocky roll-out, asking "Why would we expand failure?”

Issues discussed ranged from gun control to bipartisan compromise in the wake of Washington’s shutdown showdown. Though the attacks varied little from previous debates, the candidates hit the ground running, first decrying their opponent’s respective financial plans for the Commonwealth.

First on CNN: Making the pitch for Virginia women

Washington (CNN) – Hours before Thursday's final debate in the race for Virginia governor, a leading abortion rights group says it's going up with internet ads that attack the Republican candidate in the race, state Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, for "meddling in women's private health decisions."

NARAL Pro Choice America tells CNN that they'll spend five figures to run the spot between now and the November 5 election. FULL POST

Poll: McAuliffe maintains advantage in Virginia gubernatorial race

Washington (CNN) – The Republican and Democratic candidates vying to become Virginia's next governor both addressed the recent government shutdown on the campaign trail, but a new poll indicates the issue had little to no impact on the race.

The Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday, less than two weeks before Election day, shows Democratic nominee Terry McAuliffe with a 46%-39% advantage over Republican rival Ken Cuccinelli, with Libertarian Party candidate Robert Sarvis hitting the double digits at 10%.
