Will a Santorum win in Louisiana change GOP race?

(CNN) - Registered Republicans voted Saturday in Louisiana's primary while Rick Santorum, heavily favored to win there, and Newt Gingrich assailed President Barack Obama's energy policies and Mitt Romney's hefty campaign war chest.

The visual of the week, the venerable Etch a Sketch, made an appearance as a prop during a Santorum stop in Wisconsin.

Gingrich: Obama policies fuel Muslim claims

Port Fourchon, Louisiana (CNN) - Barack Obama is a Christian, Newt Gingrich said Friday, but he also said he understands why some people believe the U.S. president is Muslim.

"Why does the president behave the way that people would think that? You have to ask why would they believe that? It's not because they're stupid," Gingrich said after a campaign stop on Louisiana's Gulf Coast Friday.

GOP candidates focus on Louisiana

(CNN) - A poll released Friday shows Rick Santorum with a comfortable lead over front-runner Mitt Romney in Saturday's Louisiana Republican primary, but he was in a mess over remarks he made over President Obama, which his rivals seized on.

Santorum said Thursday, "we might as well stay with what we have" in the White House when comparing Romney to President Barack Obama.

Poll: Santorum well ahead in Louisiana

(CNN) – Rick Santorum holds a substantial lead over the other Republican presidential candidates in Louisiana ahead of the state's Saturday primary, according to a new survey.

The American Research Group poll showed the former Pennsylvania senator received 43% support among likely Republican voters, ahead of rival Mitt Romney's 27%, Newt Gingrich's 20% and Ron Paul's 6%.

Man calls Obama Muslim, Gingrich doesn't correct

Lake Charles, Louisiana (CNN) – During a question and answer session in Lake Charles, Louisiana, Wednesday, a man stood up and said that, among other things, President Obama "is a Muslim."

"I believe that Obama is not stupid," the man began. "I also believe that, number one, Obama is a Muslim."

Romney wins Illinois, gears up for Louisiana

Schaumburg, Illinois (CNN) - With a decisive win in the Illinois presidential primary, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney now sets his sights on the bayou where Louisiana holds the next Republican primary.

"We thank the people of Illinois for this extraordinary victory," Romney told supporters in the Chicago suburb of Schaumburg Tuesday night. "Elections are about choices. Today, hundreds of thousands of people in Illinois joined millions of people in this country in this cause."

Pro-Romney super PAC increases ad buys

New York (CNN) – As Mitt Romney's allies hope Illinois hands their candidate a major victory, the super PAC backing his Republican nomination bid, Restore Our Future, is investing more in future contests.

The super PAC made its first purchase in Maryland for spots beginning this week. It bought $456,862 worth of broadcast and cable time there and also purchased $47,395 of additional time in Wisconsin bringing its total there to $1,319,025. Both of those states vote in two weeks on April 3rd. Romney campaigns in Maryland on Wednesday.

Twin Southern wins reinvigorate Santorum campaign

Lafayette, Louisiana (CNN) - A beaming Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum declared he "did it again" and "defied the odds" Tuesday night as he took the stage fresh off his wins in the critical Southern states of Alabama and Mississippi.

Speaking to a packed banquet room at a hotel in Louisiana - a state that holds its contest next week - the former Pennsylvania senator told supporters that if they followed in Tuesday's footsteps, he'd be one step closer to clinching the title of 'Republican nominee.'
