Top conservative could face tough choice in '16

Washington (CNN) - It's something Al Cardenas hopes he never has to do: Choose between two good friends.

But that's the dilemma the chairman of the American Conservative Union could face if Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush both decide to run for the White House in 2016.

Rubio aims to avoid same-sex rights as 'central issue' in immigration debate

(CNN) - Republican Sen. Marco Rubio said Tuesday he hopes immigration rights for same-sex couples "doesn't become a central issue" in the ongoing debate, referring to it as a "landmine" that could thwart attempts to pass a comprehensive immigration reform package.

In a wide-ranging interview with BuzzFeed that streamed live online, the junior senator from Florida also raised questions about climate change and whether the government should play a role in combating it.

Rubio: Obama sees immigration as a 'political' matter

(CNN) – While speaking in an interview with CNN en Español, Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida appeared to sharpen his rhetoric Tuesday against President Barack Obama in this week's immigration debate.

His remarks were made in a Spanish-language interview with CNN en Español's Anchor/Senior Correspondent Juan Carlos Lopez. Translated into English, the junior senator argued that if Obama "has decided to use this as an opportunity to move (immigration reform) to the left–let's say, to be more flexible–well then he is hurting this effort."

Rubio lays out proposal to 'modernize' immigration

(CNN) - Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Florida, is laying out elements of his proposal to reform the immigration system, which he pitches as much-needed modernization for the outdated system.

Rubio, who was elected in 2010 to his first U.S. Senate term, told The Wall Street Journal in an interview published Saturday that his plan would include a permanent residency provision and a route to citizenship for those undocumented immigrants currently in the United States, but he stressed that the plan was “not blanket amnesty or a special pathway to citizenship.”

Cliff vote sets up potential 2016 flashpoint

(CNN) - Political junkies were picturing the scene before the gavel came down: Rep. Paul Ryan, Sen. Rand Paul and Sen. Marco Rubio, sparring on an Iowa debate stage in December 2015, explaining their three-year-old votes on the deal designed to avert the fiscal cliff.

The top prospective Republican presidential candidates on Capitol Hill took opposite sides on the package that will stave off automatic tax increases - Rubio and Paul said "no" in the Senate's 2 a.m. vote on New Year's Day, while Ryan said "yes" when the House voted nearly 20 hours later.

Rubio clarifies age of the Earth answer

(CNN) - Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida attempted to clear up Wednesday his controversial answer to a question about the Earth's age last month.

"Science says (the Earth) is about 4.5 billion years old. My faith teaches that's not inconsistent," Rubio said at a Politico Playbook Breakfast in Washington. "God created the heavens and the Earth, and science has given us insight into when he did it and how he did it."

Rubio suggests ways to bridge 'opportunity gap'

(CNN) - Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida outlined elements of a platform to bridge what he termed the "opportunity gap" - a lack of favorable circumstances in which individuals could lift themselves into the middle class.

"One of the fundamental promises of America is the opportunity to make it to the middle class," Rubio said Tuesday, receiving a leadership award named in honor of the late conservative congressman, Cabinet secretary and GOP vice presidential nominee Jack Kemp.
