Assault weapon ban, other restrictions pass in Maryland

(CNN) - Maryland is set to adopt some of the nation's strictest gun laws after the state Senate passed a bill on Thursday that includes an assault weapons ban and gun magazine limits.

The legislation now goes to Democratic Gov. Martin O'Malley, who is expected to sign it into law.

Breaking: Maryland General Assembly votes to ban death penalty

(CNN) – The Maryland General Assembly voted Friday to ban the death penalty. The vote was 82 for and 56 against.

The bill now goes to Gov. Martin O'Malley's desk.

(CNN) - Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley is heading to South Carolina later this month, a move that will likely fuel further speculation that the Democratic governor is considering a White House bid in 2016.

He'll headline a conference for the South Carolina Democratic Party on March 23.

Maryland upholds same-sex marriage law

(CNN) - Maryland voters chose to uphold a new law allowing same-sex couples to marry in the state Tuesday, according to a CNN projection.

The bill legalizing same-sex marriage was signed into law in March by Democratic Governor Martin O'Malley.

Baltimore, Maryland (CNN) - From her Baltimore kitchen, Rebecca Murphy is lobbying legislators, crafting signs and making phone calls as she wages a battle to allow gays and lesbians to marry in her state.

The married mother of two doesn't have a personal stake in the fight. Rather, Murphy represents the growing number of people nationwide who support gay rights regardless of their own sexual orientation.

Poll shows majority favor same-sex marriage in Maryland

(CNN) – A majority of likely voters in Maryland support an upcoming ballot question on same-sex marriage by a slight majority, a poll released Thursday indicated.

The survey, from the Washington Post, showed 52% of likely voters in the state supported Question 6, which would uphold Maryland's current same-sex marriage law. Forty three percent did not support the question.

Bloomberg to spend big in next three weeks

(CNN) - New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced Wednesday the launch of an "independent spending campaign" that will aid moderate candidates in both parties during the next three weeks.

"It's critically important that we have elected officials in Washington, Albany, and around the nation who are willing to work across party lines to achieve real results," Bloomberg said in a statement on his website.

Obama jabs Romney over economy

(CNN) – President Barack Obama delivered harsh lines against his Republican rival on Tuesday, saying while he was impressed with Mitt Romney's corporate career, the presumptive GOP nominee had "drawn the wrong lessons from these experiences."

"When I hear governor Romney say his 25 years in the private sector gives him a special understanding of how the economy works, my question is why are you running with the same bad ideas that brought our economy to the brink of disaster?" Obama said at a campaign fund-raiser in Baltimore.
