Akin imbroglio is bad news for Republicans

Washington (CNN) - If there is any silver lining for Republicans from the Todd Akin imbroglio, no one seems to have found it yet.

Election forecasters have downgraded the Missouri congressman's chances of winning the U.S. Senate seat held by Democrat Claire McCaskill because of his incendiary comments on rape and pregnancy.

Sources: Republicans prepare to 'grind it out' as Akin stays in

Washington (CNN) – Republicans are preparing to, in the words of one senior GOP source, “grind it out for a while” after embattled U.S. Rep. Todd Akin declared he was remaining in the race for U.S. Senate in Missouri despite calls from his party’s leadership to step aside.

Republican officials said Wednesday that they do not expect Akin to bow out of his race against Democratic incumbent Sen. Claire McCaskill in the next few days and aren’t sure if he’ll ever drop his bid. They are, however, monitoring a few crucial dynamics in the race that will play out in the days ahead.

Akin defies mounting calls to withdraw from Senate race

(CNN) - Republican Rep. Todd Akin allowed a state deadline to pass Tuesday, defiantly staying in the race to unseat Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill despite mounting calls for him to withdraw over incendiary remarks on rape and pregnancy.

Under Missouri law, Akin would now need to get a court order to pull out of the race as he waited beyond the 5 p.m. deadline. He would also be required to pay for any necessary reprinting of ballots.

Top Dems, Obama campaign seek to tie Romney to GOP anti-abortion stance

(CNN) - Top Democrats on Tuesday pounced on news that Republicans adopted as part of their party platform a call for a constitutional ban on abortion and sought to tie the controversial policy plank to Mitt Romney’s campaign.

In a conference call with reporters, Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz asserted that the measure, which does not provide an exception for pregnancies that result from rape and incest, “was written at the direction of the Romney campaign.”

Missouri voters weigh in on Akin's Senate bid

St. Charles, Missouri (CNN) - The term "#Akin" was still trending on Twitter Tuesday, two days after the Missouri congressman committed a gaffe on rape. And Missouri voters were still reeling from what many viewed as an incendiary choice of words.
