
Washington (CNN) - If there is any silver lining for Republicans from the Todd Akin imbroglio, no one seems to have found it yet.
Election forecasters have downgraded the Missouri congressman's chances of winning the U.S. Senate seat held by Democrat Claire McCaskill because of his incendiary comments on rape and pregnancy.

Republican officials said Wednesday that they do not expect Akin to bow out of his race against Democratic incumbent Sen. Claire McCaskill in the next few days and aren’t sure if he’ll ever drop his bid. They are, however, monitoring a few crucial dynamics in the race that will play out in the days ahead.

(CNN) - Two of the top non-partisan political handicappers are altering their ratings of the U.S. Senate race in Missouri following a massive controversy surrounding the Republican challenger, Rep. Todd Akin.
The Cook Political Report Tuesday moved their ranking of the contest from "toss up" to "likely Democrat" and the Rothenberg Political Report from "toss-up/tilt Republican" to pure "toss up."

(CNN) - A pariah among what he calls "party bosses," Republican Rep. Todd Akin turned to the Internet on Wednesday to help pay for a U.S. Senate campaign that's lost funding since his controversial remark about rape and pregnancy.

Under Missouri law, Akin would now need to get a court order to pull out of the race as he waited beyond the 5 p.m. deadline. He would also be required to pay for any necessary reprinting of ballots.

In a conference call with reporters, Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz asserted that the measure, which does not provide an exception for pregnancies that result from rape and incest, “was written at the direction of the Romney campaign.”
