Gingrich pushes back against Mandela critics

Washington (CNN) - Newt Gingrich is fighting back against conservative critics who attacked the former Speaker of the House and co-host of CNN's "Crossfire" for his praise of Nelson Mandela.

After Mandela passed away Thursday, Gingrich posted a statement, praising him as "one of the greatest leaders of our lifetime."

Obama says he tried to answer Mandela's 'call'

Washington (CNN) – In 1980, Nelson Mandela was sitting in a South African prison cell, serving a life sentence.

On the other side of the world, a young college student named Barack Obama was riveted by the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa and the brewing crusade to free the renowned activist.

Bill Clinton on Mandela: 'He inspired me before I knew him'

(CNN) - Former President Bill Clinton said Friday he and revered statesman Nelson Mandela had a "genuine friendship."

The former South African president, who emerged from prison after 27 years to lead his country out of decades of apartheid, died Thursday after ongoing health issues.

Former presidents to travel to Mandela memorial

(CNN) – Former President George W. Bush will join President Barack Obama on a trip to South Africa to attend a memorial for Nelson Mandela. Former President Bill Clinton will also fly to the country, but details on his travel plans have not been released.

"President and Mrs. George W. Bush have gratefully accepted the President and Mrs. Obama's invitation to accompany them to South Africa on Air Force One and attend President Nelson Mandela's memorial services next week," Bush spokesman Freddy Ford said.

Hillary Clinton on Mandela: 'The loss of a giant among us'

(CNN) – Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who first met Nelson Mandela in 1992, said Friday the anti-apartheid icon's death marks "the loss of a giant among us."

Clinton made her remarks at an award reception commemorating the late Democratic Rep. Tom Lantos, the only Holocaust survivor to serve in Congress.

Left and right use Mandela's death as opportunity to bash their favorite bogeymen

Washington (CNN) – After South African icon Nelson Mandela’s death, many took to Twitter to say his life – and the way he forgave those who shackled him for 27 years – brought to light how America’s acrimonious political climate is small, petty and exasperating.

Others proved that point by using the African leader’s death as an opportunity to attack their favorite political bogeymen by sometimes engaging in strained arguments.

(CNN) – U.S. lawmakers and former presidents from both sides of the aisle took time Thursday to mark the death of Nelson Mandela, the prisoner-turned-president who reconciled South Africa after the end of apartheid, is dead.

Mandela was age 95.

Nelson Mandela, anti-apartheid icon and father of modern South Africa, dies

(CNN) – Nelson Mandela, the revered statesman who emerged from prison after 27 years to lead South Africa out of decades of apartheid, has died, South African President Jacob Zuma announced late Thursday. He was 95.

The former president battled health issues in recent months, including a recurring lung infection that led to numerous hospitalizations.
