(CNN) – They're not on most people's short lists, but Rep. Michele Bachmann and former Speaker Newt Gingrich would make excellent choices for Mitt Romney's running mate, a spokeswoman for President Barack Obama joked Wednesday.
"We all think Newt Gingrich or Michele Bachmann would be an excellent choice for Mitt Romney to choose," Obama campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki said aboard Air Force One as the president traveled to a campaign stop in Colorado.
(CNN) - Newt Gingrich had some biting words for President Barack Obama on Wednesday, bolstering charges made by Mitt Romney's campaign that the president is dismantling welfare reform.
The former House speaker, who worked with former President Bill Clinton to champion the welfare-to-work law in 1996, charged the Obama administration with using "radical" methods to alter the program as part of a liberal agenda.

Gingrich – who suggested to senior Romney advisers they take on the welfare issue - has been asked to participate in a conference call on behalf of the Romney campaign, expected to take place Wednesday, according to a Gingrich source. He will also do a number of television interviews and will write an op-ed in a conservative publication to buttress Romney's position.
(CNN) – Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich defended controversial remarks made by presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney while overseas and said, while he may not be speaking, he will have a major role at the Republican National Convention.
Gingrich, appearing on "Starting Point with Soledad O'Brien" on Wednesday, said he doesn't think Romney made a mistake in Israel. Gingrich felt that Romney was telling a difficult truth when he connected cultural differences to economic success at a high-dollar fundraiser in Jerusalem earlier this week.

Miriam Adelson, the wife of Nevada casino mogul and major GOP donor Sheldon Adelson, got a $5 million refund for one of her contributions to Winning Our Future, the super PAC that almost single-handedly kept Newt Gingrich's campaign alive by running millions of dollars in ads on his behalf.
Washington (CNN) – Newt Gingrich resurfaced one of his most controversial lines from the Republican primary season, saying on Friday it was a matter of "patriotic duty" to defeat President Barack Obama in November.
"Barack Obama and the values he represents and the amateurish incompetence he has proven are a direct threat to the survival to America as we know it, and defeating him is a national, patriotic duty," Gingrich said at the Faith and Freedom Coalition conference in Washington, D.C.
(CNN) - Former GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich pushed back against comments made by former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush Monday, in which Bush argued Ronald Reagan would struggle to fit in with what he described as today's partisan-charged Republican Party.
"I'm not sure what Jeb's referring to," Gingrich said on CNN's "John King, USA." "We just had a pretty grueling campaign, which had a fair amount of disagreement, a pretty wide range of views from Ron Paul to say Tim Pawlenty."
Washington (CNN) – A week after Mitt Romney pulled out of the Republican presidential race in February 2008, he stood next to John McCain, with the national press corps capturing the moment, and said: "I'm officially endorsing his candidacy."
In April 2008, about seven weeks after Mike Huckabee ended his run for the Republican presidential nomination, he and McCain campaigned together. Huckabee was quoted as saying: "The main thing is getting Senator McCain elected."
(CNN) – Former rivals Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich will appear together at a fund-raiser in Georgia Monday, a campaign aide to the former House speaker confirmed.
R.C. Hammond said the event, slated to take place in Marietta, will also include a number of Georgia officials who supported Gingrich during the GOP primary.
Gingrich and Romney last appeared together at a fund-raiser in Las Vegas, an event which also included celebrity businessman Donald Trump. The former House speaker dropped his bid for the White House at the end of April.
