(CNN) –- After months of rallies, speeches, diner visits and rope lines, the presidential campaign trail comes to an end Tuesday.

The candidates will cast their ballots, hold a few final events to meet voters on Election Day, and then await the outcome in nominees’ hometowns.

John McCain, the Republican presidential nominee, will cast his ballot in Phoenix, Arizona. His schedule then places him in Grand Junction, Colorado, for a rally and an event in nearby Albuquerque, New Mexico.

President Bush won Colorado and New Mexico four years ago, but recent polls have shown Obama with an advantage there.

Gov. Sarah Palin, McCain’s running mate, will vote in Wasilla, Alaska, and then make her way to Arizona for the Republican Election Night party.

Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama plans on voting in Chicago, Illinois. He is then scheduled to visit Indianapolis, Indiana for an event.

The most recent CNN Poll of Polls in Indiana showed a tight race. McCain led Obama by 1-point, 47 percent to 46 percent. The polls were conducted October 26 through November 2.

Obama will return to Chicago for Election Night festivities.

Joe Biden, the Democratic vice presidential nominee, is expected to meet voters in Virginia on Tuesday.

(CNN) - It's almost over. The presidential contenders have just a few hours to stump for votes before polls open and one of the longest, most expensive and exciting presidential campaigns in recent memory draws to close.

Trailing in most national polls and at an apparent disadvantage in many battleground states, Republican presidential nominee John McCain has a punishing schedule Monday. Campaign events are scheduled in seven states.

McCain begins the day meeting voters in Tampa, Florida. He then attends rallies in Blountville, Tennessee; Moon Township, Pennsylvania; Indianapolis, Indiana; Roswell, New Mexico; and Henderson, Nevada. He ends the day in Prescott, Arizona.

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, McCain's running mate, has a busy day ahead of her as well. She is scheduled to attend rallies in five states: Lakewood, Ohio; Jefferson City, Missouri; Dubuque, Iowa; Colorado Springs, Colorado; Reno and Elko, Nevada.

Following the Nevada rally, Palin is expected to fly to Alaska, where she will cast her ballot on Tuesday morning.

Meanwhile, Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama will hold events in three states. He begins the day in Jacksonville, Florida. He then travels to Charlotte, North Carolina, followed by a rally in Manassas, Virginia.

Obama's running mate, Sen. Joe Biden, campaigns in Ohio, Missouri and Pennsylvania. He's expected to hold rallies in Zanesville and Copley, Ohio, and Lee's Summit, Missouri. He ends the day in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The GOP seems to be spending the day on defense: With the exception of Pennsylvania, President Bush carried each of the states the two tickets plans on visiting Monday.

A national CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll released Sunday showed Obama leading McCain by 7 points, 53 percent to 46 percent. The poll was conducted October 30 through November 1 and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percent.

A CNN Poll of Polls, also released Sunday, showed Obama leading McCain 51 percent to 44 percent. The polls were conducted October 28 through November 1.

Republican presidential nominee John McCain, on the second day of his bus tour through Ohio, holds rallies in Hanoverton, Steubenville, New Philadelphia and Columbus.

Meanwhile, McCain's running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, is scheduled to visit Pennsylvania, meeting voters in Latrobe and York.

Sen. Joe Biden, the Democratic vice presidential nominee, begins the day with a rally in Delaware, his home state. He's then expected to travel to Ohio for rallies in Kettering and Lima.

Ohio, with its 20 electoral votes, and Pennsylvania, which carries 21 electoral votes, have been two of the most visited states during the General Election period by the presidential tickets. The presidential and vice-presidential candidates have to each state more than 40 times, according to a CNN count of campaign visits since June 8.

Obama, meanwhile, plans to hold a rally in Des Moines, Iowa and then heads to an event in Highland, Indiana.

Barack Obama, the Democratic presidential nominee, is expected to hold a rally in Raleigh, North Carolina, and then make his way to Florida, where he's scheduled to hold rallies in Sunrise and Kissimmee.

Republican presidential nominee John McCain trails his Democratic opponent by double digits in recent polls conducted in the state, but the campaign has said they are buoyed by internal numbers not showing up in public polling.

(CNN) - With just 11 days of campaigning left, here's another sign of just how much the presidential election is being fought on Republican turf: the Democratic vice presidential nominee plans on visiting West Virginia and Virginia Friday.

Sen. Joe Biden is expected to meet voters at a rally in Charleston, West Virginia.

Prior to 2000, West Virginia was staunchly Democratic in its presidential election voting, going for the Republican only three times dating back to 1956. President Bush won the state in 2000 and 2004 by appealing to its socially conservative voters through issues like abortion and gun control.

Recent polls in the state suggest the race is close. A CNN Poll of Polls in West Virginia released Thursday showed Republican presidential nominee John McCain with a two-point lead over his Democratic rival Barack Obama, 47 percent to 45 percent. Biden is then scheduled to visit Martinsville and Danville in Virginia, another state won by President Bush in 2000 and 2004. A CNN Poll of Polls in Virginia - also released Thursday - showed Obama with a considerable advantage over McCain, leading 51 percent to 43 percent. Obama is visiting his ailing grandmother in Hawaii. No public events are planned. He is scheduled to return to the campaign trail on Saturday.

Recent polls, however, show a tight race in Indiana. A CNN/Time/Opinion Research indicated McCain had a five-point advantage over Obama, 51 percent to 46 percent. The poll was conducted October 3 through October 6, and had a margin of error of plus or minus of 4 percentage points.

The Obama campaign has spent about $4.6 million in ad spending in Indiana during the past 30 days.

The Republican National Committee has picked up the slack for McCain in Indiana, but has been vastly outspent by the Obama campaign. The RNC has spent about $1.1 million during the same period.

Following the rally in Indianapolis, Obama is expected to leave the campaign trail and visit his ailing grandmother in Hawaii. He plans to return to the campaign on Saturday, Obama campaign spokesman Robert Gibbs said on Monday.

The other half the Democratic ticket, vice presidential nominee Joe Biden, will be in North Carolina, yet another traditionally Republican state that the Democrats are hoping to flip on Election Day.

Obama is scheduled to appear at rallies in Richmond and Leesburg, Virginia, where early voting began a week ago.

Penny Gross, a supervisor of Mason District, located in the northern Virginia county of Fairfax, said she was taken back by the turnout. "I was pleasantly surprised by the crowd, surprised at the variety and quite frankly, the numbers," she said.

(CNN) - Republican presidential nominee John McCain is not giving up on Pennsylvania despite recent polls that suggest he has a lot of ground to make up during the next two weeks.

He plans to campaign there Tuesday, holding rallies in Bensalem, Harrisburg and Moon Township. The swing through the state comes on the heels of a visit to Blue Bell on Tuesday last week, Downingtown on Thursday, and a couple of visits to Philadelphia during the past few days.

The two presidential tickets have visited the state more than 30 times since June 8, according to a CNN count.

Early voting began in Nevada on Saturday, October 18, and continues through October 31.

In Clark County, where more than 70 percent of Nevada's population lives, more than 45,000 people voted during the weekend, the county's registrar of voters, Harvard L. Lomax, told the Las Vegas Sun Monday.

Of that number, more than half were Democratic voters, Lomax said. More than 11,000 were Republican voters and just over 7,000 voters had no party affiliation.

Nearly 12,000 votes were mailed in, he said. Nearly 5,400 of the mail-in votes were Republican, more than 4,900 were Democratic, and just over 1,500 had no party affiliation.

Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden is scheduled to begin a bus tour in Colorado. He's expected to meet voters in Greeley and Commerce City.

Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden is scheduled to make a swing through the Southwest, holding rallies in Messilla, New Mexico and Henderson, Nevada.

Nevada is a tossup state, according to a CNN analysis of the electoral map. A CNN Poll of Polls in that state had Obama leading 49 percent to 45 percent. The polls were conducted September 28 through October 9.

Rallies, talk shows and a dinner

(CNN) – Both presidential candidates are scheduled to attend the Alfred E. Smith dinner in New York City today.

Prior to the dinner, Republican presidential nominee John McCain is expected to attend a rally in Downington, Pennsylvania. The most recent CNN Poll of Polls in the state shows McCain trailing Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama 52 percent to 40 percent. The polls were conducted October 3 through October 12, 2008.

He is also expected to appear on the “Late Show with David Letterman,” making up for an earlier cancellation that left the talk show host fuming.

Obama is scheduled to attend a rally in Londonderry, New Hampshire, a state that is increasingly trending to his advantage. The most recent CNN Poll of Polls there showed him leading 51 percent to 42 percent. The polls were conducted September 25 through October 8.

Sarah Palin, the GOP vice presidential nominee, has a busy day ahead of her. She is expected to hold a media interview in Manchester, New Hampshire, hold a rally in Bangor, Maine, and then travel to Elon and Greensboro, North Carolina.

The Republican ticket is slipping in North Carolina. The Southern state has voted for a Republican candidate in nine of the last 10 presidential elections. But, a weak economy and shifting demographics have put the state in play. A recent CNN/Time/Opinion Research poll showed the race there deadlocked at 49 percent. The poll was conducted October 3-6.

Maine is one of two states in the country that splits its electoral votes according to the statewide and congressional district popular vote. Two of the state’s electoral votes go to the statewide winner. One electoral vote is given to the winner of each of the state’s two congressional districts.

Bangor is located in the state’s 2nd congressional district. President Bush lost the district by one percentage point in 2000 and by about 6 percentage points in 2004.

Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden is traveling to Los Angeles, taping appearances on the “Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and the “Ellen Degeneres Show.”

With the last Presidential Debate now behind them, Obama and McCain are scheduled to speak tonight at the Alfred E. Smith dinner, a political tradition that dates back to 1945. It honors the first Catholic ever nominated for President and was begun by Francis J. Spellman, the Archbishop of Archdiocese of New York’s Roman Catholic Archdiocese at the time.

Al Smith, a former New York governor, was the Democratic presidential nominee in 1928. The dinner raises money for charitable causes and has featured many luminaries through the years, including several U.S. presidents and nominees, other political leaders, businessmen and in 1947 via telephone, Winston Churchill, The British Prime Minister during World War II.
