From CNN Political Producer Peter Hamby WASHINGTON (CNN) - Longtime Democratic strategist Paul Begala hammered former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin on Friday - calling her "flaky and an intellectual lightweight." Begala was asked on CNN's "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer" to respond to a Politico story in which former House Speaker Newt Gingrich outlined several ways for Palin to repair her image. Although Begala called Gingrich "a brilliant political strategist," he said giving advice to Palin is an exercise in futility. "Here's the problem," said Begala, a CNN contributor. "He is trying to treat her like a serious person. She is not. OK? She is about half a whack job. She does not have the intellectual heft of Newt Gingrich or almost anyone else in the Republican Party, and I think she has proved that." He continued: "I admire Newt Gingrich for pretending that she is a serious person. But Sarah Palin has proven herself to be flaky and an intellectual lightweight." Conservative journalist Terry Jeffrey, appearing alongside Begala, defended Palin for having "rock solid principles." But he said Palin needs to be more aggressive in opposing the president's policies. At this point, Jeffrey said, "I think it's not proven" she can go toe-to-toe with President Obama. James Carville said he and Stan Greenberg have polled Limbaugh's name for 'a long time.'
WASHINGTON (CNN) – Democratic strategist James Carville avoided saying Wednesday if he had been in contact with the White House over ongoing efforts to portray talk show host Rush Limbaugh as the leader of the Republican Party. Carville was asked on CNN’s The Situation Room about a report in Politico that said Carville and his longtime friend, CNN contributor Paul Begala, pushed the idea of attacking Limbaugh in their daily conversations with White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel. Carville said it was Limbaugh who started the war of the words. “I think that honestly I don’t want to take credit away from the great Rush Limbaugh who did it on January 16 when he said he wanted the president’s policies to fail, and that’s what started the whole thing,” Carville said. “So don’t give Paul and I, or Rahm credit. Credit is due to the great Rush Limbaugh. So my hat’s off to you, Rush.” The Politico piece noted that Carville and his partner, pollster Stan Greenberg, began polling Limbaugh’s popularity last year during the presidential campaign. Carville said he and Greenberg have included Limbaugh in their polls “for a long time,” and said they were working on a new poll to be released soon. Huckabee mistakenly attributed a Gerald Ford quote from 1974 to Abraham Lincoln.
Did McCain even consider Mike Huckabee for the ticket? In his speech tonight he stuck the knife in Joe Biden but he did it with wit. ("Sarah Palin got more votes running for mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, than Joe Biden received running for president!") One historical correction: Huckabee said Abraham Lincoln once said, "A government big enough to give you everything you want, is big enough to take away everything you have." Watch: Mike Huckabee's entire convention speech Problem is, Lincoln didn't say that. Gerald Ford did – on August 12, 1974. Gerald Ford was a great Republican. He deserved credit for his line. And once again, never once was the name "Bush" mentioned. Poor George. Filed under: Paul Begala Republican National Convention |
