(CNN) – The Russian ambassador to the U.S. said Sunday he’s “absolutely certain” the Olympic Games in Sochi next month will be safe from terrorist attacks. He pushed back against reports of a “black widow” threat.
“There was a report of some notice that (was) circulated as a kind of lookout information. It doesn't necessarily mean that there is an immediate threat,” Sergey Kislyak said in an exclusive interview on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
(CNN) – Members of Congress are split on whether to rein in the National Security Agency's surveillance activities after intelligence leaks revealed the extent of the government's data-collection program.
A review of NSA surveillance practices ordered by the White House recommended changes to the program including greater judicial oversight and more public transparency in the collection of metadata. And a U.S. district judge said that the mass collection of phone records was probably unconstitutional.
(CNN) - Rep. Peter King said fellow Republican Sen. Rand Paul owes the nation’s top intelligence official an apology after saying he should resign for “lying” to a Senate committee about a controversial surveillance program.
The New York congressman also said that Paul's comparison of National Intelligence Director James Clapper to NSA leaker Edward Snowden is "absolutely disgraceful."
(CNN) – Republican Rep. Peter King on Monday unveiled a Political Action Committee called "American Leadership Now" aimed at supporting moderate voices within the Republican Party.
King of New York was in the early primary state of New Hampshire to speak with conservative groups.
He told CNN the location for the unveiling of the PAC was not a coincidence.
Washington (CNN) - New York Rep. Peter King is headed to New Hampshire later this month on a trip that includes a meeting with a well-placed Republican operative and a speech to a group that aims to elect local Republicans.
King, whose name has been thrown around as a possible Republican candidate in 2016, told CNN in an interview that he is only traveling to the crucial primary state “as a national politician” and will not be “asking for anyone’s endorsement or for donations.”
(CNN) – Following media reports that the National Security Agency tapped the phones of about 35 world leaders, Rep. Peter King said he “can't believe that the President wouldn't have known” more details on the extent of the NSA’s surveillance programs.
"He certainly should have known, if he didn’t,” the former chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on “The Situation Room.” “I think that's almost more of a serious issue that something like that at that level would be conducted without him knowing it."
Washington (CNN) - The vote to end the shutdown took place in October 2013, but it may provide some clues about the 2016 race for the White House.
There are a bunch of potential presidential hopefuls in Congress, but since all Democrats voted lockstep to back a compromise to reopen the government and raise the debt ceiling, it's the Republican votes that are more interesting.
(CNN) - Moderate Republican Rep. Peter King said Sunday there’s “no way” enough House Republicans will side with Democrats on passing a “clean” continuing resolution to fund the government and end the shutdown crisis. A "clean" resolution would be one that has no language that makes changes to Obamacare.
The idea came up Saturday, when House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi announced that 195 House Democrats signed their names to a letter saying they’ll support a resolution in line with a budget that has received support from some House Republicans.
If House Speaker John Boehner put the resolution to a vote, Democrats would need about two dozen more votes from Republicans to reach a two-thirds majority.
But King said that strategy just isn’t going to fly.
(CNN) - Rep. Peter King repeated his harsh refrain Tuesday evening, calling Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, a "fraud."
On CNN's "Erin Burnett OutFront," the New York congressman said the ongoing government shutdown proves the Texas Republican's "defund" strategy never had a chance of stopping President Barack Obama's signature health care law.
Washington (CNN) – Rep. Peter King, who called fellow Republican Ted Cruz a 'fraud,' said his office is now receiving threatening phone calls from people who say they're supporters of the Texas senator.
"You can't always blame a person if his followers act in a terrible way," King said on CNN's "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer." However, he expressed concern about the "vile, obscene" nature of the phone calls.
