CNN: Five things Chuck Hagel may be asked about
When the Senate Armed Services Committee is gaveled into session Thursday, Chuck Hagel is likely to face some sharp questions from many of his old colleagues. If confirmed as secretary of defense, the one-time infantry sergeant and twice-wounded Vietnam veteran would be the first former enlisted man to lead the Pentagon. The former Republican senator from Nebraska gets his chance to answer questions Thursday morning during his confirmation hearing, and here are five subjects where he can expect them.

CNN: McCain moves from backer to skeptic on Hagel
During his 2000 presidential run, a voter asked Republican Sen. John McCain who he might choose as secretary of defense. McCain responded by tossing out the name of a dear old friend and colleague, Senator Chuck Hagel, the very man who would be nominated to that post by a Democrat and become a frequent McCain target 13 years later.

CNN Security Clearance: Clinton defends her diplomatic legacy
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said she can't be faulted for not solving some of the thorny diplomatic issues she faced her in term. In her final week of Secretary of State, Clinton defended her legacy in an exit interview with CNN's Jill Dougherty and Elise Labott. Clinton acknowledged that her legacy includes unsolved problems in some of the world's hot spots, but noted that she assumed the job four years ago at a time of great uncertainty.

The U.S. military is ending its policy of excluding women from combat and will open combat jobs and direct combat units to female troops, multiple officials told CNN on Wednesday. CNN: Crowd of 800,000 to welcome Obama to second half of his presidency
A day after formally beginning his second term, President Barack Obama on Monday takes part in the full trappings of his inauguration by reciting the oath of office in front of a crowd expected to number between 800,00 and 900,000 people. The nation's first African-American president also will become only the 17th U.S. leader to deliver a second inaugural address before leading the traditional parade up Pennsylvania Avenue to the White House.

CNN: Sotomayor's inaugural moment on hectic day
There is no constitutional requirement that the Supreme Court preside over the inaugural – it's just been that way and a little history was made around that on Sunday. Chief Justice John Roberts delivered the oath at the White House to President Barack Obama for a second term. Just prior, Justice Sonia Sotomayor swore in Joe Biden to another four years as vice president, becoming the first Latina jurist to administer an inaugural oath.
