CNN Poll: Gun control opinions following shootings

Washington (CNN) - Americans' attitudes toward gun control have remained steady in the wake of the recent shootings in Colorado and Wisconsin, according to a new national poll.

A CNN/ORC International poll released Thursday indicates that the public remains divided on the issue, with 50% saying they favor no restrictions or only minor restrictions on owning guns and 48% supporting major restrictions or a complete ban on gun ownership by individuals except police and other authorized personnel.

CNN Poll: Health care ruling changes views of Supreme Court

Washington (CNN) - The Supreme Court's decision to uphold the national health care law may not have changed many minds regarding the controversial measure, but a new poll indicates it sure did change Americans views of the high court.

According to a CNN/ORC International survey released Monday, the public is divided on last week's ruling, with 50% saying they agree with the Supreme Court's decision and 49% saying they disagree. And there is the expected partisan divide, with more than eight in ten Democrats agreeing with the decision, more than eight in ten Republicans disagreeing, and independent voters divided, with 52% disagreeing and 47% agreeing.

New CNN Poll: Perry sits atop GOP field

Washington (CNN) – A new national survey is further proof that Texas Gov. Rick Perry's entrance earlier this month into the race for the White House has dramatically altered the battle for the Republican presidential nomination.

According to a CNN/ORC International Poll of Republicans and independent voters who lean towards the GOP, Perry now sits atop the list of Republican presidential candidates, with strong support from most demographic groups.

CNN Poll: MLK had influence on majority of Americans

(CNN) - On the 48th anniversary weekend of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, a majority of Americans say the civil rights leader made an impact on them.

According to a new CNN/ORC International poll released Saturday, 66 percent of adults in America said King influenced them.

New CNN Poll: Perry near top of pack in GOP nomination battle

Washington (CNN) - As Rick Perry moves closer and closer to a run for the White House, a new national survey indicates that the longtime Texas governor is close to the top of the pack in the hunt for the Republican presidential nomination.

According to a CNN/ORC International poll, 15 percent of Republicans and independents who lean towards the GOP pick Perry as their first choice for their party's nomination, just two points behind former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who's making his second bid for the White House. Romney's two point margin over Perry is within the survey's sampling error.

New CNN Poll: Majority want tax increase for wealthy and deep spending cuts

Washington (CNN) - Most Americans want a special congressional committee tasked with drafting a long-term solution to the nation's mounting federal deficits to include tax hikes for the wealthy and businesses and deep cuts in domestic spending, according to a new national survey.

A CNN/ORC International Poll released Wednesday also indicates that the public doesn't want the super committee to propose major changes to Social Security and Medicare or increase taxes on middle class and lower-income Americans.

CNN Poll: Majority say invoke War Powers Act

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama's overseas trip is done, but a new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation national poll indicates domestic debate over some hot-button international policy issues, including Libya and the Middle East, rages on.

On Libya, some members of Congress want to invoke the War Powers Act, and according to the survey, a majority of Americans appear to agree. Fifty-five percent of people questioned in the poll, which was released Tuesday, believe that Congress, not the president, should have the final authority for deciding whether the U.S. should continue its military mission in Libya.

CNN Poll: Obama's approval rating edges up thanks to foreign policy

Washington (CNN) – President Barack Obama's performance on national security and international affairs and his image as a strong leader appear to be behind his rising approval rating, according to new national poll conducted as the president was on an overseas visit to four countries.

A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Monday indicates that Obama's approval rating among Americans stands at 54 percent, with 45 percent saying they disapprove of the job he's doing as president. Obama's approval rating appears to have steadily risen in the past two months, from 48 percent in early April to 52 percent in early May and the current mark of 54 percent.
