Obama honors girls killed in 1963 church bombing

(CNN) - President Barack Obama on Friday awarded posthumous Congressional Gold Medals to four African-American girls killed in a Birmingham, Alabama, church bombing that became a key and tragic moment of the civil rights movement.

Addie Mae Collins, Carole Robertson and Cynthia Wesley, all 14, and Denise McNair, 11, were killed during Sunday services on September 15, 1963, at the 16th Street Baptist Church.

Obama salutes 'fallen heroes' in Memorial Day address

(CNN) - President Barack Obama offered a salute to the troops in his weekly address on Saturday, capping a week that saw him discussing national security and terrorism on several occasions.

"Unofficially, (Monday is) the start of summer - a chance for us to spend some time with family and friends, at barbecues or the beach, getting a little fun and relaxation in before heading back to work," he said. "It's also a day on which we set aside some time, on our own or with our families, to honor and remember all the men and women who have given their lives in service to this country we love."

Obama heckler: 'Don't call it heckling'

Washington (CNN) - She repeatedly interrupted President Barack Obama by screaming during his national security speech Thursday, but don't call her a "heckler."

"I don't call it heckling, I call it speaking out because the president is not implementing policies that we need to see changed," Code Pink Founder Medea Benjamin said on CNN's "Newsroom" Friday.

Sex assaults threaten military trust, Obama tells Naval graduates

(CNN) - A rash of sexual assaults in the armed forces undermines Americans' confidence in the military, President Barack Obama told newly commissioned officers at the U.S. Naval Academy Friday.

"Those who commit sexual assault are not only committing a crime, they threaten the trust and discipline that makes our military strong," Obama told the graduates, who were commissioned as Naval ensigns and Marine Corps second lieutenants.

President Obama forgets to salute

Washington (CNN) - President Obama seemingly preoccupied forgot one piece of protocol as he boarded Marine One on his way to Annapolis Friday.

Obama walked past the Marine at the bottom of the helicopter's stairs and didn't give the traditional salute.

Realizing his mistake upon entering Marine One the president pivoted in the doorway, jogged back down, shook hands and spoke briefly with the Marine, before boarding the helicopter for a second time.

Christie welcomes Obama with open arms

Washington (CNN) - Republican Gov. Chris Christie doesn't have politics on his mind ahead of President Barack Obama's visit to his state next week.

Unsurprisingly the New Jersey firebrand said he is focused on his job as governor and will welcome Obama to the state roughly seven months after superstorm Sandy hit the East Coast.

Obama, Christie to tour Jersey Shore next week

(CNN) - President Barack Obama and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie will survey the Jersey Shore coastline together next week, a White House Official told CNN Thursday.

Their Tuesday meeting comes about seven months after the late October storm Sandy displaced tens of thousands and caused billions of dollars in damage. It also comes on the heels of the Memorial Day weekend, when several portions of the shore popular among tourists are set to reopen.

Obama heckled by Code Pink leader

Washington (CNN) – President Barack Obama's solemn remarks on drones and counterterrorism were interrupted at length Thursday by a protester who loudly advocated for the closure of the Guantanamo Bay prison – the same position Obama was stressing in his speech.

The woman shouting was identified as peace activist Medea Benjamin of the group Code Pink, whose members have been loudly interrupting congressional hearings and official speeches for years.

Obama, 'troubled' by leak investigations, asks for review

(CNN) – Justice Department probes leading to the seizure of journalists' phone and e-mail records have prompted a review of the government's practices in investigating leaks of secret information, President Barack Obama said Thursday.

In a speech that also detailed the government's use of drones to kill American citizens – acts which were originally made public through leaks of classified information – Obama said reports of investigations targeting journalists had him worried for the future of a watchdog press.
