Priebus doubts there’s a direct link between Christie and bridge scandal

(CNN) – While some Republicans are taking a wait-and-see approach on the question of whether New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie knew about the now-famous plot to close access lanes to the nation’s busiest bridge, the chairman of the Republican National Committee said Sunday he doubts investigators will find any direct link between Christie and the politically motivated scheme.

“I don't think there will be one,” Reince Priebus said. “Because I think we've got a really smart person in Chris Christie, who's a former U.S. attorney, who understands what's out there.”

Washington (CNN) - The head of the Republican National Committee waved off any suggestion he might not rally behind Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell in his bid for reelection.

"Of course I'm going to support the leader of the Republican Party," Reince Priebus told the panel on CNN's "Crossfire" on Tuesday.

Priebus: It matters who airs Clinton films, not who makes them

(CNN) – Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said Sunday that his organization’s planned debate boycott was focused on NBC and CNN – which plan to air films about Hillary Clinton – and not companies which may produce those projects.

Priebus, speaking on CNN’s “State of the Union,” was responding to a question from Chief Political Correspondent Candy Crowley about a report in The New York Times that Fox Television Studios was in the “early stages” of talks to produce NBC’s miniseries about Clinton, set to star Diane Lane. Fox Television Studios is a corporate sibling of Fox News Channel and the Fox broadcast network.

RNC chair not picking sides on GOP Obamacare tactics

(CNN) – The Republican divide over whether to shut down the federal government in a bid to end President Barack Obama's health care law is merely a tactical split, rather than a larger ideological rift, the party's national chairman said Sunday.

Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus, speaking on CNN's "State of the Union," said he wasn't picking a side on the issue, which has pitted establishment party members against their younger colleagues.

Republicans on jobs report: Grand bargain?

Washington (CNN) – A few days after President Barack Obama announced his proposed "grand bargain" to spur economic growth, Republicans remain unimpressed with the United States economy, reacting harshly to the new jobs report for July.

According to the Labor Department, the economy added 162,000 jobs last month, lowering the unemployment rate from 7.6% in June to 7.4% in July. The numbers are less than the 180,000 jobs that economists had originally anticipated for the month.

Steele rips Republican party-building effort

Washington (CNN) – Michael Steele has a bone to pick.

After Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus announced a "50 state strategy" last week that will deploy paid field staffers in every state in a push to rebuild the GOP's stale voter contact operation, Steele, the party's former chairman, said he "had to laugh."

First on CNN: Republicans launch their own '50 state strategy'

Washington (CNN) – After weaknesses in its ground game were badly exposed in 2012, the Republican National Committee is taking a page straight out of the Democratic playbook and launching an ambitious “50 state strategy” that will steer party resources and staffers to every corner of the country as it works to repair its voter contact effort before the next presidential election.

The party’s short-term vision with the project is to help the GOP win key races this November and in next year’s midterm elections.

Republicans quick to say jobs report not good enough

Washington (CNN) – Both the White House and Republicans are weighing in on the new unemployment report. And as expected, their reactions were completely different.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released a better than expected jobs report Friday, with 195,000 jobs added to the economy while the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 7.6%.

GOP chief: 'We need comprehensive immigration reform'

Washington (CNN) - One day after the Senate passed a full-spectrum immigration bill with overwhelming support, the chairman of the Republican National Committee re-emphasized the need for reform but said the final contours of the legislation are far from settled.

"We need comprehensive immigration reform," RNC Chairman Reince Priebus told CNN in an interview in his Capitol Hill office. "I don't think we can continue to drift along with this mess of immigration laws that we have. And a mess that in many regards has been the results of our government not even enforcing the laws that are in place. There is plenty of blame to go around for why we are in this position, but I think it's about time that we address it."
