Saxby Chambliss, citing gridlock, to retire at end of term

Washington (CNN) - Saxby Chambliss, the Republican senator from Georgia, said Friday that the "legislative gridlock and partisan posturing" had grown so impenetrable in Washington that he would not seek re-election in 2014,

"This is about frustration, both at a lack of leadership from the White House and at the dearth of meaningful action from Congress, especially on issues that are the foundation of our nation's economic health," Chambliss wrote in a statement announcing his retirement. He pointed to partisan haggling over raising the debt ceiling in 2011, and more recently to the bickering that transpired over a deal to avoid the fiscal cliff.

Sen. Chambliss brings tax pledge debate outside beltway

(CNN) - Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Georgia, hit back at Grover Norquist's no-tax pledge, saying he doesn't want Washington to "dictate" how he votes and that his commitment is to his constituents.

"I think that you sent me to Washington to think for myself. And I want to vote the way you want me to vote," Chambliss told a group of Republicans in a suburb northwest of Atlanta Saturday, according to an Atlanta Journal-Constitution report. "I don't want to be dictated to by anybody in Washington as to how I'm going to vote on anything."

Erickson won't challenge Chambliss after all

(CNN) – Conservative activist and CNN contributor Erick Erickson wrote Friday a primary challenge against Sen. Saxby Chambliss won't be in the offing after all, pointing to the ramifications an intra-party fight would have on his family.

Earlier this week, Erickson floated the idea of challenging Chambliss after the second-term Republican senator said he would consider reneging on a pledge not to raise taxes.

Conservative activist and CNN contributor considers primary bid

Washington (CNN) - Conservative activist Erick Erickson, editor of the leading publication RedState.com, is considering mounting a primary challenge against Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss.

"I had been rather dismissive of it, but in the past two days have been approached by several organizations and individuals I greatly respect who have asked me to really consider it," Erickson, also a CNN political contributor, said Tuesday. "I owe them that and will consider it, but am not prepared to commit to it. I have plenty of time to think about it."

Norquist responds to senator's break with no-tax pledge

(CNN) – Anti-tax crusader Grover Norquist said the latest Republican to suggest a break with a pledge to oppose any tax increase is a promise broken to his constituents, not him.

"If he wants to change his mind and become a tax increaser so we don't have to reform government, he needs to have that conversation with the people of Georgia," said Norquist appearing on CNN's "The Situation Room" Friday of Sen. Saxby Chambliss' recent move away from the no-tax pledge.

Chambliss fires off on Norquist's anti-tax pledge

(CNN) – A top Republican U.S. senator brushed off the anti-tax pledge pushed by activist Grover Norquist and embraced widely for years by GOP lawmakers.

"I care more about my country than I do about a 20-year-old pledge," Sen. Saxby Chambliss told Georgia television station WMAZ, a CNN affiliate, on Wednesday. "If we do it his way, then we'll continue in debt and I just have a disagreement with him about that."

Debt gang to unveil plan to other senators Tuesday

Washington (CNN) – Members of a bipartisan group of senators who worked for months to forge an agreement to make deep reductions in the federal debt will unveil a plan to slash trillions of dollars off that debt over the next 10 years.

The former Gang of Six members will reveal their plan privately Tuesday to a group of 40 to 50 senators.

'Gang of Six' senators make rare public appearance

WASHINGTON (CNN) – In what could be the Washington equivalent of a Komodo dragon spotting, senators known as the Gang of Six made a rare public appearance on Wednesday – at least some of them.

At the Peter G. Peterson Foundation's Fiscal Summit held in Washington, four of the six original members of the bipartisan group working toward a deficit reduction plan sat down to a panel discussion. Though the senators withheld the details of their deficit reduction plan, they did give some insight into how the group works.

Smaller gang says it's still working toward a deal on debt

Washington (CNN)-One day after Oklahoma Republican Sen. Tom Coburn dramatically dropped out of the bipartisan Gang of Six debt talks, the remaining five members of the group huddled late Wednesday to discuss their next steps in trying to reach a deal to cut the nation's debt by $4 trillion over the next decade.

After an hour-long meeting in the office of Sen. Mark Warner, D-Virginia, the senators emerged jointly before cameras for the first time to announce they would continue working towards a deal, even if Coburn had left the group.

Senators misled by likely fake bin Laden photos

Washington (CNN) – Several senators said Wednesday they had seen a photograph of Osama bin Laden after he was shot, describing it to reporters and using it to help form their opinion on whether or not President Obama should release pictures of the dead terrorist.

Now, on a day when fake photographs of a dead bin Laden are flying around the internet, those senators say they cannot be sure whether what they saw and talked to reporters about was real.
