5 things we learned from the State of the Union

Washington (CNN) - As with any State of the Union address, President Barack Obama this year had several audiences and there were multiple aims for the White House: To show that he understands the economy is still struggling and that he will do more to help the unemployed find jobs, and to portray a different side of himself than what was seen on Inauguration Day - one willing to reach out to the other party.

And we saw a president trying to expand the use of executive power to help push his agenda.

Here are five things we learned Tuesday night:

The impact of a $9 minimum wage

New York (CNNMoney) - After promising five years ago to raise the federal minimum wage, President Obama finally unveiled a plan to do so on Tuesday.

In his State of the Union address, Obama pressed to raise the hourly rate in stages to $9 an hour in 2015, up from the current $7.25, and index it to inflation. The change, should it become law, would boost the wages of 15 million Americans, according to the White House.

First on CNN: In tea party response, Paul will urge GOP to embrace immigrants, cut spending

Washington (CNN) - Sen. Rand Paul will call on his fellow Republicans to be more welcoming of immigrants Tuesday night in a speech where he will also sharply criticize President Barack Obama and his congressional colleagues for failing to reduce the nation's debt.

"We are the party that embraces hard work and ingenuity, therefore we must be the party that embraces the immigrant who wants to come to America for a better future," the Kentucky Republican is expected to say in the tea party response to Obama's State of the Union address, according to an advanced text of his remarks acquired by CNN. "We must be the party who sees immigrants as assets, not liabilities. We must be the party that says, 'If you want to work, if you want to become an American, we welcome you.'"

Obama to hold off on announcing carbon standards for older power plants

(CNN) - As environmentalists wait to hear what President Barack Obama will say about climate change Tuesday night, they may be disappointed that one popular proposal won't be mentioned in his State of the Union address.

A senior administration official said the president will not announce regulations on carbon emissions for existing power plants, a standard already in place for new plants and a policy change sought by many environmental activists.
