Top House Democrat equivocates over cutting own pay in event of sequester

Washington (CNN) – The number two House Democrat, Steny Hoyer, is "not absolutely positive" that the automatic spending cuts that are scheduled to go into effect will actually happen, but as his office prepares for their potential impact, he doesn't think cutting his own pay is the way to absorb the budget cuts.

"If I take a pay cut frankly that won't help our national defense that won't help our domestic investments. It won't help the economy," Hoyer said at his weekly session with reporters on Capitol Hill.

Hoyer compares GOP debt limit tactics to hostage taker threatening to shoot child

Washington (CNN) - Less than two weeks after one of the nation's deadliest school shootings, the No.2 Democrat in the U.S. House, Steny Hoyer, compared Republican tactics for dealing with the nation's debt limit to someone threatening to shoot a child hostage.

"It's somewhat like taking your child hostage and saying to somebody else, 'I'm going to shoot my child if you don't do what I want done.' You don't want to shoot your child. There's no Republican leader that wants to default on our debt, that I've talked to," Hoyer said at a Capitol Hill press conference.

Hoyer: Romney comments help 'in every swing district in America'

Washington (CNN) - The number two House Democrat predicted Wednesday that GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney's comments at a closed door fundraiser would prove "helpful" to congressional Democrats and President Obama when voters go to the polls in November.

"It's got to help us in every swing district in America," House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer told reporters on Capitol Hill. Independent voters are "are looking to find a party that they believe cares about them and their interests and their future."

Number two House Democrat opposes own colleagues on oil reserves

Washington (CNN) - The number two House Democrat broke Monday with some of his fellow Democratic colleagues, and said he does not believe releasing oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) is appropriate now and it wouldn't help lower gas prices.

Last week three House Democrats - Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vermont, Rep. Ed Markey, D- Mass, and Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn– wrote a letter to President Barack Obama urging him to release oil from the U.S. stockpile to reduce prices at the pump.

Top House Democrat urges colleagues to vote against GOP debt limit measure

Washington (CNN)–Advising fellow House Democrats not to take the political bait, the number two House Democrat, Maryland Rep. Steny Hoyer, is urging his colleagues to join with House Republicans and oppose a bill to raise the debt limit when the House votes Tuesday night.

House Republican leaders scheduled a vote to raise the nation's debt ceiling by $2.4 trillion. The measure, which doesn’t include any spending reductions or budget reforms, is expected to fail in the GOP-controlled House. Republican aides say they don’t anticipate any Republicans will vote for it. But GOP leaders want to show that a bill without significant spending cuts cannot pass in the House and use the vote to demonstrate that Democrats are not serious about cutting spending. While many Democrats agree Congress needs to reduce the deficit by cutting spending, they don't favor tying the issue to the debt vote.

Number two House Democrat opposes moratorium on new nuclear facilities

Washington (CNN) – The number two House Democrat, Steny Hoyer, whose Maryland district includes a nuclear power facility, told reporters Tuesday he doesn't support a moratorium on construction of any new nuclear facilities in the United States, a proposal some Democrats are pushing in the wake of the nuclear crisis in Japan.

"I don't agree on a moratorium if a moratorium means that we simply stop in place," Hoyer told reporters Tuesday.
