Shutdown key issue in special Senate election

(CNN) – New Jersey voters head to the polls on Wednesday in a special U.S. Senate election that's become a proxy fight over the federal government shutdown and the bitter partisan battle in the nation's capital over the rollout of the national health care law.

Wednesday's election between two-term Democratic Newark Mayor Cory Booker and Republican nominee Steve Lonegan will also result in a slight shift in the current balance of power in the Senate.

Final NJ Senate debate produces platitudes, barrage of one-liners, little policy-talk

(CNN) - With only a week left until New Jersey’s Senate special election, the only civil moment of Wednesday's final showdown between Cory Booker and Steve Lonegan came at the night's close, with a handshake.

But in between that small gesture of political sportsmanship and the moderator Jim Rosenfield's call to order, New Jersey's senate candidates meted out relentless, and sometimes personal, verbal assaults, criticizing each other on everything from their stances on same-sex marriage to the on-going partial government shutdown.

Back and forth ads in Booker-Lonegan battle

(CNN) - A conservative Super PAC is questioning Michael Bloomberg's new TV spot that supports New Jersey Senate hopeful Cory Booker and touts the Newark mayor's education achievements.

The American Commitment Action Fund says it's spending $130,000 to run an ad that will air across the Garden State, accusing Booker of failing Newark's schools despite a $100 million donation from Facebook founder Mark Zuckerburg to help improve the schools.

NJ Senate debate: attack, attack, attack

(CNN) – Cory Booker may have taken his diminished lead in the latest polls to heart, starting out on the offensive against Steve Lonegan in the first debate for New Jersey's Senate seat and never letting up.

Lonegan, who trails Booker by 12% and 13% in the most recent polls, returned the favor, blasting Booker's record as mayor of Newark while Booker in turn repeatedly painted Lonegan as a "tea party extremist."
