Gun control in crosshairs at NRA convention

(CNN) – Within minutes of the National Rifle Association's opening forum at their annual meeting Friday, the group's leaders went after gun control proposals and advocates who sought to expand tougher firearm laws following the deadly Newtown elementary school massacre.

"Where we see tragedy, Barack Obama and Michael Bloomberg, they see opportunity," said Chris Cox, the executive director for the NRA's Institute for Legislative Action.

Cruz takes spotlight in immigration debate

Washington (CNN) - He may be one of the most junior members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, but Sen. Ted Cruz's comments carry a lot of weight.

That may be because the freshman senator from Texas, who was just elected to Congress last November, won office with the help of the tea party movement, is a darling among some conservatives and is the only Republican on the panel who may have designs on the White House in 2016.

Gun bill filibuster in the offing

(CNN) - A trio of Republican senators say they will block any gun control legislation that they consider a threat to Second Amendment rights.

Republican Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky, Mike Lee of Utah and Ted Cruz of Texas plan to oppose a bill that "would infringe on the American people's constitutional right to bear arms, or on their ability to exercise this right without being subjected to government surveillance."

Rubio opposes government funding bill unless Obamacare de-funded

(CNN) – Legislation funding the federal government for the next several months wouldn't gain support from Sen. Marco Rubio unless the bill de-funds President Barack Obama's sweeping health care law, the Florida Republican said on Thursday.

Rubio, long an opponent of Obamacare, said he could support a so-called continuing resolution bill if it includes an amendment stripping funding from the Affordable Care Act. Such an amendment has been offered by Sen. Ted Cruz, who like Rubio was elected with support from the tea party.

Austin, Texas (CNN) – By the time Republican Sen. Ted Cruz arrived for an event at a gun manufacturing business outside Austin, there was a healthy-sized, cheering crowd to greet him. One constituent even held a handmade sign saying, "Ted Cruz Rocks."

The scene had the look and feel of a campaign event. Except that the freshman senator isn't up for re-election for six years.
